d Letters .Patent No. 99,325, dated .February 1,1870. l
IMPROVED SASH-HOLDER. I
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part. of the same.
To all whom it mag/*concern Bea knownmhat I, Dim R. Kum, of Alle.
town, in the county of Lehigh, and State of Pennsyl-V vania, have invented an Improved Sash-Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanyingsheet of' drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon. My invention consists of a sash-lock, in which an eccentric or toe-cam, which projects downwardly from 1a sliding lever, a longitudinal slot of the lever, and a. recess or opening in the case or frame of the window, areefnployed to retain the sash at any degree of elevation or opening, and to lock it when down.
0n referenceto the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part of this specification- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a window-frame and sash, showing the sash when closed and locked, and also a supplemental view, showing the sash when raised Figure 2 is a sectional view of a detached part'of the windowlfm'me and sash, showing the position of ythe locking-lever when not engaged with the windowframe; `an d Figure 3 is an enlarged view of the locking-lever. Similar letters refer to similar parts Lin the several views. f
The locking-lever A is constructed with an eccentric or cam-foot B, projecting downwardlyfrom it. At-
the end adjacent to the casing or window-frame, at any convenient part oi' the body of it, a pin-slot, c, is formed 1engtl1wise,as shown. 'l The outer end is turned upwardly, and forms the thumb-rest or handle j'.
An opening, D, is made through one side of the sash E, at any convenient point, the eccentric or camend of the lever A takes into it, and is held from working out by a pin, d, on which it slides and vibrates.
When the window is down, andV it is required to raise and support it at any particular poin-t, the
thumb-end f, of' the lever,.must be elevated, to clear the eccentric from the frame crease, as shown in iig. 2. When it is at the designated point, as shown in the supplemental view, fig. 1, the thumb-end must be or foot to engage against the oppois generated to pre gravity. The eccenthe.` frame, and, by forcing the sash site side of it," sufficient Afriction vent it from falling, by its own tric or cam holds tighter and more firmly, the greater the downward pressure on the sash.
The sash, when down o r closed, is locked, so-as not to be raised from without, as follows:
An opening or mortise, g, is formed in the 'frame F,- corresponding, in position, with the lever A. When the sash is at its lowest point, the lever is tilted, as shown in Iig. 2, and shoved forward, by reason of the pin-slot c, into the recess or mortise g, the top of that end of the lever engages with the top of the mortise,
and the top of the body of the lever bears against the top of the opening D, of the sash. The pin d, in the slot e contributes an upwardly-bearing pressure. In this casel the eccentric or cam does no come into play.
It will be seen, from iig. 1, and its supplemental View, and iig. 2, that the top ofthe opening D, ofthe sash E, is bevelled upwardly, outwardly and inwardly. The outwardly-inclined bevel is to assist the lock in holding the sash open or raised, as shown iu the supplemental view'of iig. 1, by giving .it an inclined bearing, thereby permitting the swell of the cam to more fully contact or press against the frame or casing of the window. The inwardly-inclined bevel assists the lock in holding the sash down or closed, as shown in g. 1. 4
The lever A has two downwardly-bearing pressures, viz, the top of the opening in the casing oi" the window, and the inwardly-inclined bevel of the opening D, of the sash, and one upwardly-bearing, viz, the pin d.
I am aware that a earn or eccentric has been heretofore used for sash-locks, and is therefore not the subject of a patent,` in itself, being an old device. I
am also aware that a cam, moving on a pin, in a slot, is notnew. f
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lever A, with its cam or `eccentric B, and slot c, in combination with the piud, the opening D of I the sash, with its double incliies or bevels, and the mortise g, in the case or farne of the window, suhstantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto sign my name. to' this specification, in\preseuce .of two subscribing-wit nesses.
Witnesses: DAVID R. KLINE.
