RECEPTACLE-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Application led March 25, 1910. Serial No. 551,502.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD Gonne, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for fastening covers over the mouth of receptacles such, for example, as dust receptacles of cleaning machines in which the receptacle is closed by means of a fabric cover, and the principal object of the invention is to provide the fastener with novel means for causing it to firmly hold the cover in position and also with means which facilitates the handling of the fastener.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a top plan view of the improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of a receptacle and the cover therefor showing the fastener being placed in a cover-holding position on the mouth of the receptacle. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the fastener in the cover-holding position.l
Referring to said drawings by numerals, 1 designates a receptacle, which may be the dust reservoir of a cleaning machine, or other type of receptacle, and which is provided with the usual upper flanged mouth 2. A cover 3 is provided for the said mouth said cover being preferably a sheet of fabric.
The improved fastener or retainer which is employed to clamp the cover 3 over the mouth of the receptacle is composed of a ring t which at one portion of its outer surface is provided with a laterally projecting arm 5 the outer end of which is bent at right angles and provided with a handle 6. A pad 7 is provided for one portion of the inner surface of said ring, said pad being preferably formed of elastic material such as rubber. The pad is provided with a groove 8 on its outer surface for the reception of' the portion of the ring to which it is attached.
In use, the cover 8 is placed over the mouth of the receptacle as shown in Fig. 2 and the ring fitted partly over the same with its padded portion yin clamping position over the flange of said mouth. The ring is then drawn transversely of said mouth so that the elastic pad 7 will be compressed, whereupon the free portion of the ring may be forced around the flange of the mouth and the pressure of the pad will retain the ring tightly about said flange. To release the cover, the ring may be readily rocked from its clamping position by means of the handle 6.
What I claim as my invention is As a new article of manufacture a cover fastener comprising a ring provided with an integral right angle extension, an elastic crescent-shaped pad provided with a groove in its outer surface extending the entire length thereof, said ring seated in said groove, the outer ends of said pad lying flat against the periphery of the ring and constituting a continuation thereof, and a handle on the outer end of said extension.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa- Witnesses:
F. I). SoHRonDER, I-I. C. SCHROEDER.
