Description

J. L, KIVLAN. JAR CLOSURE. APPLICATION nun) OUT. 31,1908.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909' appears when in use.
NITED n rnntr oFrjioE.
JOHN L. KIVLAN, Oi" l iOS'l'ON, NASSAU [THET'IhZ JAR-CLOSURE.
No. 913,21i.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
Serial No. 460,531.
To all whom 1t may concern:
Be it known that I, JonN L. KIVLAN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Bos ton, in the county of Suifollt and State of lWassaehus-etts, have invented a new and useful. Improvement in Jar-Closures, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention is particularly adapted to preserve jars, but may be applied to other articles oi a similar uee, and consists in a peculiar device for clamping the cover of a jar to the mouth of the Said jar and exerting upon it a spring-like pressure to keep and press firmly upon the gasket, thus insuring an air-tight joint.
The exact nature of the invention may be best understood by reference to the fol deseription and to the accompanying drawing in whieh- Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the upper part of the jar and the cover showing the clamping device an it Fig. 2 is a View shmw ing in elevation the upper part of the jar, the cover being removed and the (-lainping dexiee in its open poeition. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the upp r part oi the jar with the cover clamped in position.
In the drawings the jar is indieated by J. the cover by T and the gasket by it. The clamping device consists of a wire V which is secured to the neck of the bottle by being placed immediately under the enlarged part C as shown. The cover T is made as shown; that is perfectly fiat or slightly eoneaved and is provided with a. peripheral depression P to receive the inturned ends (I of the elaniping; hook I) whereby the jar, when filled, may in) [)lzlk'fll upsidodown for the purpose of securing a perfectly air-tight seal.
The clamping; parts beside the. wire W consist of a hinge pier-e or toggle ll one end of which is bent around the wire Y and has a part H whieh extends downward as shown, and resting upon the surface of the jar serves to keep the hinged piece in position. To the hinged piece I have a loop L, Whieh eonueots the hinge piece to the clamping. hook I), as shown.
To we the improved jar the clamping hooks l) l) are drawn away from the eox'er l and the said rover ie removed. See l ig. 2. Non the jar is filled. the gasket R and rover 'l put in pla e. then the clamping hooks I) l) are f'orewl into place as shown in l igs. 1 and 53. This; aetion firmly Sttlll'th the cover an? the jar may be plaeed away either i'i; d Shiv up or in a reversed position as may he defiiled.
Claim.
jar i'lflHl l't' eousisting oi a. cover, a ring e neireling the noel; of the jar and having attached hinge pieees eonstrueted to hold wingiug toggle loops, said toggle loops, and clamping hooks, pivotally attaehed lo the said toggle loops, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this; 1 iiwifieatioi1 in the presenee (if-two subscribing witnesses, on this 29th lay of October l 1908.
JOHN L. KIVLAY.
