. i "the county of Oneida and btate of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers and Locks Therefor; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
()ur invention has for its object to provide an improved cover and lock therefor, especially adapted for use onmilk and cream cans, and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combination of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the: drtui ings, Figure l is a view in elevation showing the improved cover and lock applied to a milk or cream can, some parts thereof being broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 03 m of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the line :1" 90* of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
The numeral 1 indicates the body portionof milk or cream can that is con-- tracted at its upper end, and terminates in an upwardly projecting annular neck portion Suirium ling the neck 2 and spaced outward therefrom, is a vertically projecting annular collar 3, which extends both above and below the neck 2. The collar 3, at its lower edge, terminates in an outwardly and downwardly formed extension 4, the loweredge of which is soldered or otherwise secured to the body 1 at the junction with its contracted uJper end portion. A horizontally extended at ring 5 is telescoped over the neck 2 and within the collar 3, and is rigidly secured thereto by solder or otherwise. The ring 5 is located .below the upper edges of the neck 2 and collar 3 and forms a channel (3 therebetwcen. The neck I! is closed and sealed by means of a cover 7 that is in the form of a hollow disk connected to the collar 3 by means of a. single hinge i and adapted when closed to snugly fit within the collar 3. When the cover 7 is closed. thc'top thereof lies flush with the .struction.
upper edge of the collar 3. In the bottom of the cover 7 is formed an annular channel 9 in the bottom of which is seated a pliable packing 10 of rubberor any other suitable material. When the cover 7 is closed, the flange 9 projects therein and the packing 10 is pressed into engagement with the upper edge of the flange 9, therebyforming a tight. joint between the cover and the can for excluding all dirt and dust from the interior of the can.
For securing the cover 7 closed ari'd against accidental opening in case the can is upset, we provide a lock of novel conthe inner end portion of the lock bar 11, and
a beaded screw stud 15 extending there through and secured to the wca ring plate 13. At its outer or free end, the lock bar 11 extends outside of the flange 5 and has rigidly secured thereto a finger piece 16. In one edge of the lock bar '11, just back-of the fin- Said lock .comprises a flat spring J ger piece 16, is formed an L-shuped lock notch 17, the bottom of which extends outward or toward thetinger piece 16, and is adapted to receive the headed stud 12. A guide strip 18 overlies the lock bar 11 and its ends are bent laterally downward and anchored to the base plate 13. In some instances, it might be desirable to doaway entirely with the base plate 13, in which case the lock bar 11 and guide strip 18 would be connected directly to the top of the cover 7.
To lock the cover 7 in a closed position, the lock bar is first pulled outward to the limit of its endwise movement. Then first, by a lateral swinging movement of the lock bar 11, followed by an inward endwise movement thereof, the lock notch 17 is car order to clear the head of the stud 12, and when released, will be frictionally held thereby under spring tension.
For preventing an unauthorized person from tampering with the contents of the can, an ordinary seal, such as largely used by express companies, is placed around the lock bar 11 and headed stud 12. As shown, this seal comprises a wire 19 with its ends connected by means of a piece of lead 20, or other suitable material.
Our improved cover and lock, as is evident, may be used in connection with other receptacles too numerous to mention, aside from their use in connection with milk and cream cans, as described.
What we claim is:-
1. The combination with areceptacle having a neck portion and a. collar surrounding the same and extending thercabove, of a cover adapted to be seated in said collar, a pliable packing on said cover, and means for pressing said packing into engagement with said neck to form a tight joint between the cover and the receptacle, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a receptacle having a neck portion and a collar surrounding the same and extending thereabove, of a cover adapted to be seated in said collar, a channel formed in the bottom of said cover, a pliable packing in said channel, and means for pressing said packing into engagement with said collar to form a tight joint between ceptacle, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a receptacle having a neck portion and a collar surrounding the same and extending thereabove, of a cover hinged to said collar and adapted to be seated therein, a channel formed in the bottom of said cover, a pliable packing in said channel, and a lock for securing the cover closed and for pressing said packing into engagement with said neck to form a tight joint between the cover and the receptacle, substantially as described.
4. The combination with areceptacle having a neck portion and a collar surrounding the same and extending thereabove, of a cover hinged to said collar and adapted to be seatedtherein, a channel formed in the bottom of said cover, a pliable packing in said channel, and adapted to be pressed into engagement with said neck to form a tight joint between the cover and the receptacle, a lock projection on said collar, and a lock bar connected to said cover for interlocking the cover and the re-- I on ageme'nt with said projection, substantia ly as described.
5. The combination with a receptacle having a neck portion and a collar surrounding the same and extending thereabove, of a cover hinged to said'collar and adapted to be seated therein, a channel formed in the bottom of said cover, a pliable packing in said channel and adapted to be pressed into engagement with said neck to form a tight joint between the cover and receptacle, a headed stud secured to said collar, a lock bar connected to said cover by a slot and pin connection, and a lock notch formed in said lock bar for interlocking engagement with said headed stud by an endwise and lateral movement of said lock bar, substantially as described.
6. The combination with areceptacle having a neck portion and a collar surrounding the same and extendin thereabove, of a cover hinged to said col at and adapted to be seated therein, a channel formed in the bottom of said cover, a pliable packing in said channel and adapted to be pressed into engagement with said neck to form a tight joint between'the cover and receptacle, a headed stud securedto said collar, a spring lock bar connected to said cover by a slot and pin connection, and an L-shaped lock notch formed in said lock ing engagement with said headed stud by an endwise and lateral movement of said lock bar, substantially as described.
7'. In combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a headed stud secured to said receptacle, a lock bar connected to said cover by a slot and pin connection, an a lock notch formedin said lock bar for interlocking engagement with said headed stud by an endwise and lateral movement of said lock bar, substantially as described.
8. In combination with a receptacle and a cover therefor, of a headed stud secured to said receptacle, a spring lock bar connected to said cover by nection, and an L-shaped lock notch formed in said lock bar for interlocking engagement with said headed stud by an endwise and lateral movement of said lock bar, substan tially as described.
