BRUSH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
Application filed March 8, 1906. Serial No. 304,971.
To ttl whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ADRIAN HAR- Ris, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brattleboro, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Paint-brushes when not in use become dry and hard and require to be softened to fit them for use, and to keep such brushes in condition for use is the object of my improvement, and in the claims I will point out the precise feature wherein my improvement resides, in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows the brush with its suspending and sealing plate. Fig. 2 shows the `brush suspended by its handle-plate upon the flaring walls of the cup as a sealing-closure therefor. Fig. 3 shows the cup-sealing plate in perspective.
The brush-suspending and cup sealing plate may be made of material such as leather felt, cork, or rubber, or paper but I prefer leather with a central opening and stiffened by a metal ring l, the central opening of which is of greater diameter than the central opening in the sealing-plate, so that a marginal portion 2 of the plate around its opening will have a certain degree" of flexibility in its grip on the brush-handle, whereby the brush is suspended, while the diameter of the ring is less than the diameter of the plate to allow a marginal portion 3 of its circumference to have a certain degree of flexibility in its sealing function upon the flaring walls 4 of the cup. The metal ring, besides giving stiffness to the body of the brush-suspending and sealing plate, is thick enough to Weight the plate, and thereby render more effective its seating and sealing function upon the handle and upon the flaring walls of thefcup, and thereby prevent the evaporation of the fluid in the cup. The metal ring also allows pressure to be applied to the plate to cause it to have a closej oint on the flaring walls of the cup and prevent any deflection or twisting of the sealing edge and to render its sealing function effective without regard to the level position of the plate, and as turpentine is best suited for keeping the brush in a moist condition its evaporation is prevented by properly sealingthe cup. The metal ring is riveted to the flexible plate, and the latter is removable to allow the brush to be used in painting in narrow corners and places where it would not be convenient to use the brush with the sealingplate.
I claiml. A brush-suspending and cup-sealing plate of yielding material having a central opening adapting it to fit with a grip upon the brush-handle, and having a stiffeningring the central opening of which is of greater diameter than lthe opening in the plate to form a yielding inner portion of said plate, the ring having a diameter less than the diameter of the plate to form a yielding marginal portion, whereby the plate has a yielding sealing function around its central opening upon the handle and around its circumference upon the cup-walls.
2. A brush-suspending and cup-sealing plate of yielding material having a central opening, and supplemented by ametal weighting-ring having a central opening of greater diameter than the opening in said plate, the diameter of the ring being less than that of the plate, to allow the marginal portions of said plate to have seating and sealing functions upon the walls of the brush-handle and of the cup.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES ADRIAN HARRIS.
