SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 756,103, dated March 29, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY A. DOTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Ghittenden and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fountain-brushes; and its object is to provide a device of this character which may be attached to a bottle or other receptacle containing liquid blacking or other suitable material and which will automatically discharge the liquid upon the bristles of a brush when said bristles are moved back and forth during the operation of blacking a shoe, applying mucilage, &c.

The invention consists in providing a head from which extends a nipple which is inclosed by bristles. This nipple is formed of flexible rubber or other suitable material, and when the bristles are moved back and forth over a surface the liquid will be caused to pass from the bottle in small quantities and will thus keep the bristles supplied.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully described and claimed, and illustratedin the accompanying drawing, which is an elevation of a bottle having my improved brush arranged thereon, said brush being shown in section.

Referring to the figure by numerals of reference, 1 is a bottle, preferably of the form shown in the drawing. and in the neck of which is secured a metallic tubular extension 2., Arranged at the center of this extension and extending from the outer end thereof is a small tubular holder 8, which is embedded in cement 4, interposed between it and the extension 2 and serving to secure bristles 5 within said extension 2. The inner surface of the holder 3 is provided with a recess 6 at its inner end, which is adapted to receive a rib 7 formed at the open end of a rubber nipple 8, which extends through the holder 3 and the end of which is inclosed by the bristles 5. A slit 9 is formed in the outer end of the nipple, as shown. This nipple may, if desired, be

glued within the holder 3, although, if desired, the adhesive material may be dispensed with. When it is desired to discharge from the bottle blacking, mucilage, or other liquid contained therein, said bottle is inverted, so as to permit the liquid to flow into the nipple 8.

The bristles are then moved back and forth over the desired object and will thus be pressed against the free end of the nipple 8 and open the slit 9 therein, so as to permit a small quantity of the liquid to pass therethrough and upon the bristles.

It will be seen that the brush is very simple in construction, inexpensive, and durable, and by providing the nipple the liquid is prevented from being discharged too rapidly while the brush is in use. It will also be understood that the liquid will not be discharged from the inverted bottle unless the bristles alre pressed laterally, so as to press open the s it 9.

It will of course be understood that I do not restrict myself to the exact formof bottle herein shown and described, as the extension 2 can be placed within any suitable liquidcontaining receptacle.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described the invention,

what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

l. A fountain-brush attachment for receptacles comprising a tubular extension, bristles extending therefrom and a flexible nipple inclosed by the bristles and having a slit in its outer end adapted to form an outlet from the receptacle to which the attachment may be secured.

2. A fountain-brush attachment for receptacles comprising a tubular extension, bristles extending therefrom, a flexible nipple in- I closed by the bristles and having a free outer end provided with a normally closed slit adapt- IOQ ed to form an outlet from the receptacle to which the attachment may be secured.

3. A fountain-brush attachment for receptacles comprising atubular extension, a holder secured therein, bristles within the extension and inclosing the holder, and a flexible nipple within and extending from the holder, said nipple having a slit in one end thereof adapted to form an outlet from the receptacle to which the attachment may be secured.

4. A fountain-brush attachment comprising a tubular extension,'a holder secured therein, bristles extending from the extension and inclosing the holder, a flexible nipple within the holder and projecting therefrom, said nipple being inclosed by the bristles and having a normally closed slit in its projecting end adapted to form an outlet from the receptacle to which the attachment may be secured.

5. The combination with a receptacle, of a tubular extension thereon, a tubular holder secured Within the extension, bristles secured within the extension and inclosing the holder, and a flexible nipple within and projecting from the holder, said nipple being inclosed by the bristles and having a normally closed slit in its projecting end adapted to form an outlet from the receptacle.
