Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HERBERT A. SADLER, a Citizen of the United States, residing at South Att-leboro, in the county of Bristol ancl State of Massachusetts, have invente'd a new and useful Improvement in Veil-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to certain new and useful improvements in veil fasteners, and the primary object of the invention is to provide improved and novel means whereby the veil is secured in position without the use of pins or like fastenings which penetrate the veil.

IVhile the invention is particularly described for use in connection with veils, it will be obvious that its use is not confined to this class of apparel, but may be used in connection with other articles.

A further object of the invention is to provide means which may be easily and quickly operated, and applied and removed, at the same time preserving the advantages of simplicity, and inexpensive manufacture.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the rear side of a fastener constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a fragment of the body, showing the catch member.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the body, the rear side of which at one end is provided with spaced lugs 2 and 2' between which is pivoted the extremity 11, of a clasp member 3. Clasp 3 is of general U-shape and is formed with a central spring bowed portion 4. Adjacent the opposite extremity of the clasp 3 is secured a knob or ball 6 which may be aflixed in any desired manner and which when the clasp is in its closed position engages between a pair of spaced hook-shaped members 5 and 5', which constitute a catch member. A rounded ball or knob 7 is carried by the rear side of body 1, adjacent the lower edge thereof, at such point that when the clasp 3 is closed, or occupies a closed position, the spring bowed portion 4: will engage over the outer surface of the knob 7 and abut against the rear side of the body l. A knob 8 is formed on the free extremity of the clasp 3, Whereby the same may be easily and conveniently operated. The ball or projection 7, is located between the catch and the pivoted end of the tongue in a plane to one side of that in which the catch and the pivoted end of the tongue lie.

In Operation, the clasp 3 being in the open position, the veil is placed over the knob 7 and the clasp 3 is then swung to closed position, at which time the outer or head portion 9 of the bowed portion 4 will ride over the outer surface of the knob 7, and occupy the position depicted in Fig. 2 of the drawings, clamping the veil between the knob 7, the rear side of the body 1 and the head 9 in an obvious manner. The free end of the clasp is then moved farther inwardly so that the ball 6 will ride in between the hookshaped members 5 and 5', over the outermost point-s of the free ends of the hooks, and after passing said points is forced by the resiliency of the bowed portion 4 to engage in the crotch portions of the hookV (being the portions between the base and the free extremities of the hook points or noses) as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

YVhen it is desired to disengage the clasp the knob 8 is given slight inward movement by the finger, sufliciently to dislodge ball 6 from the crotch of the book-shaped members 5 and 5', which constitute the catch member, it being thereby obvious that the ball 6 is normally held in closed position by the resiliency of the bowed portion 4, which latter tends to force the free end of the clasp member outwardly in a direction toward the catch member. It will further be seen that the head of the 'bowed portion is given an inclination which is toward the body 1, whereby it may perform its function of holding the veil or other article in engagement with the body 1, and in contact with the knob 7 which latter prevents lateral movement of the veil.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. In combination with a body, a clasp hinged to one end thereof and having a resilient bowed portion between its ends, a ball on the body which engages and coperates with said bowed portion to hold a veil or the like, a pair of book-shaped members which constitute a catch member, a ball on the free end of the clasp adjacent the extremity of the clasp to engage said hookshaped members, and a finger engaging member on the free vextremity of the clasp.

In combination With a body having a catch at one end, a spring tongue pivoted to the body at its opposite end, and a projecton carried by the body located between the catch and the pivoted end of the tongue in a plane to one side of that in Which the catch and pvoted end of the tongue he, said tongue being formed With a resilient central boWed part to engage and exert pressure against said projection to clamp the fabric 10 over the latter.
