WILLIAM E. LEMERAND, OF MONROE, MICHIGAN.
HAIR-RIBBON FAS'IENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Linin- RAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Ribbon Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to a device for use by ladies to hold a bow of ribbon upon the head, the object of the invention being to provide a simple and effective device of this nature to securely engage the hair and retain the bow in position, and thus to prevent loss or displacement of the bow.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whiehz- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bow fastener embodying my invention, showing a bow applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the fastener. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section thereof.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a frame yor casing, preferably formed of sheet metal and provided with a pair of parallel longitudinal channels 2 and 3 extending entirely through theV casing from end to end thereof. Preferably, the casing is formed of a single piece of sheet metal, bent to provide a top wall 4, parallel side walls 5 and a bottom Wall 6. The bottom wall 6 is formed by the juxtaposed portions of the longitudinal side edges of the blank from which the casin is made, which edges are extended into the ody of the casing intermediately between and parallel with the side walls 5 to form a partition 7 separating the interior of the casing to form the longitudinal channels 2 and 3. The top 'wall 4 is provided at its op osite ends with extensions in the form of downturned retaining hooks 6 and 9 disposed respectively in londitudinal alinement with the channels 2 and 3 for a purpose hereinafter described. rl`he parts of the casing are maintained in proper relation by a fastening pin or rivet 7a passing through the partition and side walls. `thshaped fastening pins'lO and 11 are slidably mounted within the respective chambers or channels 2 and 3 and are limited in outward movement by the pin 7 l which forms a stop therefor. As shown, the upper and lower arms 12 and 13 yrespectively of each pin extend above and below the rivet 7 a and the bight Specification of Letters Patent.

portion or return portion 1a of the pin is thus disposed to `engage the rivet. The free end of the upper arm 12 of each fastening pin is bent at its outer end to form a 'linger loop 15, and the free end of the lower arm of the pin .is bent downwardly and innfardly to provide an engaging hook 16. he loops 1.5 are adapted to be engaged to slide the fastening pins outward for use, and when the pins are slid inward, as indicated by the position of the pin 11 in llig. 2, the loops are adapted to be engaged with the retaining hooks 8 and 9 to secure the fastening pins in retracted position. The upper arms of the respective fastening pins are freely movable or have sufficient spring ac tion to adapt the A.finger loops to be engaged with said retaining hooks and be held in engagement therewith against accidental displacement.
ln the use of the device the casing 1 is dis posed upon the rear side of the bow 17, as shown in Fig. 1, and suitably secured thereto by a central binder or tie 18 which may form a portion of the bow. Upon sliding the fastening pins outward and disposing the bow in position to be secured upon the head, the bow may be fastened in position by sliding the pins inward until the finger pieces 15 are engaged with the retaining hooks S and 9, whereby the engaging hooks G will be forced into the hair and the bow fastened in position. Inasmuch as the loop-s 15 are held in engagement with the retaining hooks by the spring action of the upper arms of the fastening pins, it will be apparent that the device will be locked in position, thus eilectually preventing loss or displacement of the bow.
The device may be made of any material suitable for the purpose and be ornamented as desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A bow fastener comprising a frame or casing, opposing fastening pins slidably mounted in the casing, and interengaging means upon the casing and fastening pins for holding said fastening pins in engaging position.
2. A bow fastener comprising a frame or casing, fastening pins slidably mounted thereon, and interengaging hooks upon the casing and pins for retaining the latter in engaging position.
A bow fastener comprising a frame or easing provided with retaining ineinbers at the opposite ends thereof, opposing fastening pins siidabiy mounted on said frame or casing, and looking means upon said pins to engage said retaining members to hold the pins in fastening position.
e. A device of the oiiaraoter described,
comprising a Vframe or easing, opposing iastening pins shdabiy mounted on said oa Ang,
said pins being provided with hooked en gaging ends, 'nger pieces unen the pins by which the saine may be adjusted, and retaining hooks upon the ends of the casino' to oe engaged o v said finger pieces to retain the pins in engaging position.
5. A bow fastener comprising a frame or easing having channels or compartments, opposing fastening pins slid ably mounted in said compartments, and nieans upon the casing and pins for retaining said pins in engaging position.
6. A bow fastener comprising a easing having longitudinal channels, a Cross pin extending through said channels, if-shaped fastening pins siidabiy mounted in the channels and limited in outward nioveinent 1 by said Cross pin, the free end or" one arni of each pin being formed to provide a inger piece and ne free end of the other arni thereof formed to provide an engaging hook, and retaining devices upon the ends of the easing adapted to be engaged with the finger pieoes to secure the fastening pin in engaging position.
7. A bow fastener comprising a easing having iongitudinal channels, ii-shaped pins siidabiy mounted in said channels and projecting bevond opposite ends of the casing, the free ends of the respective arins of each pin beineresneotiveiytorined to provide aiinger piece and an engaging hook, and downturned retaining hoois n. ion the ends of the @asinOl adapted to be engaged by said finger piece, the arnis carrying the latter being movable for spring aotion to hold the 'ringer pieces in engagement with said retaining hooks.
