BRACELET.
Patented May 27, 1919.
Application led January 3, 1916, Serial No. 69,761. Renewed Apri1'8, 1919." Serial No. 288,654.
'77o all whom t may concern:
' 'Be it known that I, WALTER II. PRUEEER, .t citizen'of the United States, and resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsv in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates Ato flexible bracelets of the non-extendible type and has for its object to construct such a bracelet of aseries of units each comprising a box shaped member the same being connected into a flexible chain adapted to be used as a bracelet or other similar article of jewelry.
A further object of theinvention is to provide an H-shaped link for connecting these box shape membersyieldably together.`
The invention further consists in the provision of a closing plate for the back of the box and in rolling the edges of the box inwardly and over onto the plate to permanently lock and hold the whole in position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fi re 1- is a side view of my improved brace et.
Fig. 2- is an ed e view showing the series of the box mem ers connected together.
Fig. 3- is a face view yshowing a blank as cut from sheet stock into a shape fromY which the box is struck.
Vso
Fig. 7- is a perspective view showing the back plate which fits into and is secured in the box link.
Fig.y 8- is a sectional elevation showing a number of the box members as connected together by H-shaped links also showing the back plate as being secured in the box by rolling they edge of the latter over onto that of the former.
Fig. 9 is an enlarged' view of the snap catch which releasably securesfthe opposite ends of the bracelet together.
Fig. 10*y is a sectional'elevation showing the snap as connecting the two adjacent links together.
Fig. 11 -s'a perspective view illustrating Y the construction of the endof the box show'- ing the lip portion which is releasably engaged by the shoulders of the'catch member let.`
Referring to thev drawings y10 designates thev blank vas cut from sheet'fstock from which the box member is drawn up. This blank may be made of any suitable material, but bracelets and' chains of this construction are usually made of a heavy rolled plated stock. After the blank has been cut from the sheet metal, it is then struck and drawn up into boxform as illustrated in Fig. 4 the corners being notched as at 30 to permit of the edges of this box being subsequently rolled over inwardly.
After the box has been drawn up into as at 13 inwardly from their margin 14.
The connecting link member 15 is preferably formed in the shape ofthe letter H, the cross bar portion V16 being of a width to be passed into and fit loosely in the slot 13 and the legs 17 and 18 are designed to pass into adjacent boxes and abut against their inner end walls thus loosely connecting these box members together.
In order to close the backof this box, I have provided .a plate 19 which is of a shape to fit into the-box along the dotted line 20, see Fig. 6, and after being positioned therein the edges 14 and 31 of the box are rolled over inwardly onto the plate thereby providing a secure fastenin for holding both the back and the H-link rmly in their respective boxes.
By this construction, it willtbe seen that the base metalabout the edge of the back is turned inward by the rolling of the edge, so that only the outersurface of precious metal is exposed.
In order to connect the adjacent ends of this chain or bracelet together, I have prol connected to the opposite end of the bracethe desired form the` end walls 12 are slotted vided a catch member 21, see Fig. 9, having its body portion formed of spring metal and folded over and back upon itself, one end of the body portion is provided with recesses 22 cut inward from its opposite edges, thereby forming a head or leg 23 to engage the inner wall of one of the end links and also providing a bar portion 24 which enters the slot 13 in the end wall of the box by which construction this catch is connected to the said box link. The'opposite end 25 of the body portion is provided with a presser extension 26 turned outwardly and the shoulders on each side of this extension are adapted to engage the end walls 27 of the end link 28 so that when it is desired to release this catch it is only necessary to force this presser member 26 inward and the shoulders 29 are disengaged from the edge 27 of the link 28 permitting this catch to be readily withdrawn and the chain or bracelet separated.
By my improved construction of chain or bracelet the box members may be made of inexpensive plated material and when completed none of the base metal is exposed and these box shaped links are readily conneoted or assembled into a series of links connected together by means of a simple form of H-shaped link which permits the lnecessary and desirable amount of flexibility to the chain.
I have shown and described one way of constructing the links of my improved box chain or bracelet but the detail of this construction may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
A bracelet constructed of a series of units, each unit comprising a body formed of a single piece of sheet metal having portions bent at an angle to provide side and end walls, said end walls being slotted from their marginal edges, a cover plate, the marginal edges of said kside and end walls being bent over said plate, and links connecting contiguous units, each link .being headed and provided With a shank passed through the slots of contiguous end walls of adjacent units.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
