` PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK HUSSEY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,721, dated December 22, 1903.
Application filed April 25, 1908. l Serial No. 154,347. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANK HUSSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have inventednew and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined shirt-waistfasteners and skirt-supporters; and its object is to provide a simple device which may be `readily attached to a waist andskirt and securely fasten the garments in proper relation to each other.
A further object is to provide garment-engaging hooks of novel form having means for holding the sharpened ends thereof normally in Contact with the head or Abody of the fastener.
With the above'aud other objects in view the invention consists in providing a head within which is arranged the intermediate portion of a yoke, the arms of which are provided with inverted-U-shaped portions and upwardly-extending hooks for engaging a shirt-waist and a skirt, respectively. A spring is arranged with the head or body of the device and bears upon the intermediate portion in such va manner as to hold the same either in open or closed position.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described'and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my inventiouand in whichw- Figure l is :ifrontelevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a central verticalsection therethrough. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 4 is a-sideelevation of the device in use.
Referring to the figures by numerals'of referenee, 1 is a cap which is secured over a disk 2, and this cap and disk form the head of the attachment. Apertures 3 are formed within the disk 2, and extending therethrough are arms 4, which are arranged integral with and at opposite ends of au undulated intermediate portion 5, which is located between the disk 2 and cap 1. and is contacted at all times by a spring-strip 6, secured at one end of the disk, as shown at 7. Each arm 4 has an inverted-U-shaped extension 8, and the outward ends of these arms are curved upward and inward to form hooks 9.
Y In using this improved garment-fastener the arms 4 are inserted through the corset and the head thereof arranged upon the inner side thereof. The hooks 9 are then inserted through the shirt-waist and said waist brought into position within the-U-shaped extensions 8. Subsequent to this operation the hooks 9 are placed in engagement with the skirt, and the parts will thus be held firmly in proper relation t0 eachother. In Fig. 4 I have shown the parts so arranged, and in said figure, 10 indicates a corset, ll a shirt-waist, and 12 a skirt. The device is adapted to be permanently secured to the corset and when not in use for holding a waist or skirt in position the hooked arms 4 may be swung inward with the eyes thereof in contact with the corset. As hereinbefore stated, the spring-strip 6 will hold the arms 4 either extended or retracted, as desired.
It will be seen that the device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction, occupies but a small area, and will firmly fasten the skirt and waist in position. Moreover, in view of the fact that the head is secured in a substantially stationary position upon the corset and the arms A4' swing upon the head it will be seen that a slight upward movement of the waist and skirt is permitted when strain is exerted thereupon, and injury to the garments is thus less likely to occur than where they are rigidly fastened in position. y
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made Vtherein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall with the scope ofmy, invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isV l. In a device of the character described, the combination with a disk having a cap thereon; of a spring secured to the disk and inclosed bythe cap, similar arms extending through the disk and adapted to engage a garment, and an intermediate portion integral with the arms and contacted by the spring.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a disk having a cap thereon; of a spring secured to the disk and inclosed by the cap, similar arms extending through the disk, an undulated intermediate portion integral therewith and contacted by the spring, upwardly-projecting inverted-U- shaped extensions, and upwardly-extending ro hooks, said hooks and extensions being integral with the arms.
In testimony whereof I-ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK HUSSEY. Witnesses:
JOHN O. SMART, HARRY I. BROCK.
