HANGER-STRAP FOR VEHICLES.

Be it known that I, FRANK R. BA'ICIIEL- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, in the county of 'orcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hanger-Straps for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention is more particularly designed as an improvement in hanger straps for vehicles, but articles embodying the invention may be applied to other uses than those ordinarily subserved by hanger straps.

The invention consists primarily in the combination with a strip or a loop such as in a hanger strap constitutes the suspension strip or loop. and which ordinarily is composed of flexible material, and a second loop such as in a hanger strap constitutes the hand-hold, also formed of a strip of suitable material with the ends thereof brought to gether, of a coupling-member of novel char acter combined with the parts first mentioned and joining them together.

The invention consists, further, in the article comprising a strip or loop of woven webbing, a loop formed of a sheet-metal strip having its ends brought together and secured to each other so as to jointly form an attaching lug, and a coupling member inclosing the ends of such webbing and thereby retaining the latter in loop-form, fitting upon the said lug, and fastened thereto, uniting the two loops to each other.

Having reference to the drawings,The suspension loop of the hanger strap shown in the drawings is designated 1. In the present instance it is composed of woven fabric in the form of a heavy closely woven webbing. In some embodiments of the broad principles of the invention the said loop 1 may be composed of a strip of other material suitable for the intended place of application and use of the complete article. \Voven webbing has the advantages of strength, durability and cheapness. j webbing or other strip are brought together to produce the required loop. The second loop, which in the case of hanger strap con stitutes the hand-hold, is designated :2. It is in this instance formed of a strip of sheet metal bent upon itself, with its ends brought together. The said ends are formed intermediate their width with prolongations 2 which are a little narrower than the main portion of the loop and are fastened together by tubular rivets or eyelets 2 2 The two prolongations together constitute :1 lug which serves in the connection of the two loops with each other. The said prolongations are pressed with ribbing around the edges thereof and between the two rivets or eyelets to give greater stiffness to the lug. As heretofore, the side edges of the loop 2 are turned inward, forming flanges 2, 2. which stiffen and strengthen the loop, and also serve to retain strips 3, 3*, which are slipped lengthwise under said flanges and are held thereby in place. In practice, one of the said strips. as the under one. 3, usually bears advertising matter. pictures or other ornamentation. while the other one. 3, is composed of transparent material through which the said advertising matter, etc., is visible, this strip being employed for the purpose of protecting the under strip.

The coupling member is designated 4. It is tubular, and flattened. Preferably it is made of metal and is seamless for strength and in order that there may be no edges to injure the hand of a person taking hold of the strap above the lower loop. One portion, 4*, thereof is of a size to receive within it the meeting ends of the webbing or strip of which loop 1 is composed, the said ends being secured within the said portion of the coupling member by rivets 5, The other portion, 4 of the coupling member is of a reduced size, being proportioned properly to receive within it the attaching lug of the loop 2, which fits snugly within said portion 4 and is secured therein by rivets 6, 6, passing through the tubular rivets or eyelets 2 2 of the said lug.

The coupling member forms a binding for the meeting ends of the loop 1, and conjointly with the lug of the loop 2 effects a neat and secure attachment of the two loops with each other. Replacement of either loop is readily effected by removal of the corresponding rivets 5, 5, or 6, 6, followed by substitution of another loop in the place of the one to be discarded and the riveting together of the parts once more.

To prevent accidental endwise movement and displacement of the strips 3, 8, and render it difiicult for mischievous persons to withdraw the same, the coupling member is furnished at each side thereof at the e ge of the portion 4 thereof with a lip 4 These lips project sufliciently to overlie e ends of the strips, such ends being sprung into place beneath the said lips. As the side edges of the strips are confined beneath the side-flanges of the sheet-metal loop 2, accidental disengagement of the ends of the strips from the said lips is exceedingly unlikely, and it is rendered inconvenient for any one unprovided with a proper tool to effect such disengagement intentionally.

Fig. 4; shows a modification of the coupling-member in which a swell or ridge 4 pressed outward from the portion P is utilized instead of the lip, for the same purpose as the latter.

The form of the coupling-member, and manner and means of its attachment to the strap 1, may vary. In some cases, the ends l 1 which are received within the portion 4 of the coupling-member may be separate strips or straps instead of the meeting ends of a loop, or there may be only a single strip, and in some cases, also, the rivets 2 2 which in the drawings secure the ends of loop 2 together may be dispensed with.

I claim as my invention:

1. In combination, the loop 1 composed of a strip of material having its ends brought together, the loop 2 having its ends brought together, the coupling member 4 receiving in one portion thereof the said ends of loop 1 and in the other portion thereof the said ends of loop 2, and means for securing the respective sets of ends within the respective portions of the coupling member.

2. In combination, the loop 1 composed of a strip of woven webbing having its ends brought together, the loop 2 of sheet metal having its ends brought together, the coupling member 4 receiving in one portion thereof the said ends of loop 2, and means for securing the respective sets of ends within the respective portions of the coupling member.

3. In combination, the meeting ends of a strip of material, the loop 2 having its ends brought together, the coupling member 4 receiving in one portion thereof the said ends 1 l and in the other portion thereof the said ends of loop 2, and means for securing the respective sets of ends within the respective portions of the coupling member.

4. In combination, the meeting ends of a strip of material, the loop 2 having its ends brought together and formed with extensions of reduced width together forming an attaching lug, the coupling member 4 receiving in one portion thereof the said ends and in the other portion thereof the said lug, and means for securing the said ends and lug in the respective portions of the coupling member.

In combination, the meeting ends of a strip of material, the loop 2 having its ends brought together and having side flanges, one or more strips inserted beneath the said flanges, and the coupling member receiving the respective sets of ends and having the lips which overhang and secure the ends of the said strips.

6. In combination, a suspending member, a lower loop having side flanges, one or more strips inserted beneath the said flanges, and a coupling member receiving portions of the said suspending member and the said loop and furnished with retaining devices which engage with the ends of the said strip or strips to retain the latter in place.
