To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RoswnLL L. VDOUG- LAss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hand-Straps, of which the following is a speciiication.

`This invention relates to an improved hand strap for cars and vehicles of different descri tions. Y

T e object of the invention is to provide a device which can be attached to the hand straps in cars, coaches and the like which has upon one face thereof an advertisement. The device is adapted to be attached to straps now in use, so that in' order to intro-` duce the advertising, it is not necessary to have new straps made especially therefor, but the device can be readily attached thereto or detached therefrom when it is desired to change the ad l The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following s ecification and particularly pointed out in t e claims thereof.

Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand strap provided with my improved advertising plate. Fig. 2l is a perspective view of the advertising plate as viewed from the rear. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section similar to Fig. 3, illustrating a modified means for locking the advertising plate to the strap. Fig. 5 is a transverse section similar to Fig. 3, illustrating another modified form of my invention.

Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

In the drawings, 5 is a rail such as is usually found in street cars.

6 is a hand strap of the construction usually found in street cars, the same being provided with loops 7 and 8 at the opposite ends thereof and an intermediate portion 9 to which is attached my improved advertising plate 10. This plate is formed preferably of metal, such as aluminum, in order to render the same light and neat, and partly incloses the hand strap 6. The front face 11 of said plate extends entirely across the strap 6 and ongitudinally for a portion of the length of the strap, preferably the intermediate portion 9. The opposite sides 12 and 13 of said plate are then bent around the opcposite edges of the strap and extended towar each other for a portion of the distance across the back face of said strap, thus forming U- shaped ends 14 and 15, respectively.

A space 16 isleft between the opposite edges 17 and 18 of the U-shaped ends 414 and 15, and through this space 16 the intermediate portion 9 of the strap 6 may be inserted, one edge of said strap being pushed through the space 16 and into the U-shaped end 14, the other edge of the strap being bent to enable it to be pushed into the U-shaped end 15. Finally the strap and plate are locked together by means of the tongues 19 and 20, which are formed by cutting and pressing inwardly a portion of the sides 12 and 13 of said plate 10 until they stand at an angle to the front face of said plate, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These tongues, while they do not interfere .with the insertion of the strap 6, prevent the sameA from becoming displaced relatively to the plate 10.

In Fig. 1 a modified form of locking device is illustrated in which prongs 19 and 20 are formed in the plate 10 by pressing said prongs inwardly from the rear side of the plate.

rlhe advertising matter is preferably printed or enameled upon the front face 11 of the plate 10, but can, of course, be embossed thereon, as desired In Fig. 5 I have illustrated another modified form of my invention, in which the plate 102 is bent at its opposite sides as at 122, 132 to 'partly inclose the strap 62 and is held in connection with said strap by suitable means, such as inwardly projecting prongs 192 and 202, these prongs extending into the opposite edges of the strap instead of into the back face thereof, as in the forms hereinbefore described.

Ihile I have described my improved advertising'deviee as embodying a plate which has advertising matter upon one 'face thereof, it is evident that without departing from the spirit of my invention the advertising matter might be placed on the back as well as on the front ef the plate, or on both the back and the front.

, Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:

1. An improved hand strap having a loop at veach end thereof and a plate with advertising matter thereon adapted to inclose said strap intermediate said loops.

2. An improved hand strap having a loop at each end thereof, a plate with advertising lat eaoh end thereof` and a plate thereon inlmatter thereon adapted to partially inelose l said strap intermediate said loops7 and means to look said plate to said strap.

3. An improved hand strap having a loop termediate said loops, said plate extending across the front face and longitudinally of said strap between said loops and having its opposite sides bent around the opposite edges of said strap and extending toward eaoh other for a portion of the distance across the baolr face of said strap, the Viront Alace of said plate being adapted to display advertising matter.
