CROSS-LINE BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
Application led April 27, 1910. Serial No. 558,017.
To all 'whom it may concern:
r Be it known that I, JOHN W. McMURnY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkacler, in the county of Logan and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross-Line Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in strap attaching devices, and the invention has for its object an improved cross line buckle which eifectually connects together the hand line and the bit lines of the driving rein, and renders said parts capable of being easily and quickly detached, when occasion requires.
A further object of the invention is a cross line buckle which may be easily and cheaply manufactured, and is quite practical and possesses to a marked degree the characteristics of simplicity, durability and strength.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arran ements and combinations of the parts t at I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in
. which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved buckle showing the straps applied thereto; F ig. 2 is a side edge view thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, the hand line being shown as bowed out of engagement with the tongue; and, Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective View showing the buckle and the end of the hand line in juxtaposition.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My improved cross line buckle comprises an elongated metallicv base plate 1 which is provided at longitudinally spaced points with upstanding keeper loops 2 and 3 extending transversely thereacross. The keeper loop 2 is preferably disposed in proximity to one end of the base plate, while the other keeper loop is located intermediate of the ends thereof. A rigid tongue or stud 4 upstands from the base plate at a point about midway between the keeper loops.
The end portion of the base plate remote from the keeper loop 2, constitutes a strap attaching head 5 which is preferably reduced gradually toward its juncture with the main portion of the base plate so that its side edges converge toward the same. In the present instance, the head is substantially sector-shaped. Extending along the edge of the head is an upstanding marginal rim or flange 7 that is formed with four slots extending therethrough at suitable intervals, the slots being designated 8, 9, l0 and 11, respectively. The slots 9 and 10 are arranged intermediate of the slots 8 and 1l which are formed in the opposite end portions of the ange. The end portions of the flange are disposed along the converging edges of the head and are positioned in oblique relation to the longitudinal axis of the base pla-te. It is to be particularly noted that the slot 10 is arranged in diagonal alinement with the slot 8, while the slot 9 is arranged in diagonal alinement with the slot 11.
In practice, the tongue 4 is designed to engage with the hand line 12 of the driving rein. The forward end portion of the hand line is inserted through and retained by the keeper loops 2 and 3, and is reinforced on its upper or outer side by an elongated spring plate or strip 13 that is riveted or otherwise suitably attached at its ends thereto, one end of said plate being substantially flush with the forward extremity of the hand line. The plate 13 is of greater length than the distance between the keeper loops, so that its end portions project therethrough and serve to relieve the hand line of wear. The hand line and plate 13 are formed with registering perforations 14 at a point intermediateof the ends of the latter, said perforations being engaged by the tongue 4. The plate 13 is normally substantially flat and serves to hold the hand line flat against the base plate, and thus retain the perforations 14 firmly in engagement with the tongue 4 to insure against the accidental disconnection of the parts. To release the hand line from the buckle, it is only necessary to bow the hand line outwardly from the base plate between the keeper loops and against the force of the spring plate 13, to disengage the perforations from the tongue 4. The hand line may be then, of course,
withdrawn longitudinally from between the keeper loops.
l5 designates a single strap of suitable length, the middle portion of which is passed transversely beneath the reduced'portion' of the head 5. The end portions of this strap are returned about the respective converging edges of the head and are drawn through the respective pairs of diagonally alining slots. The end portions of the strap extend a suitable distance beyond the attaching head, in divergent relation, and constitute the bit lines of the driving rein.
It is to be observed that the bit lines are crossed Within the marginal rim 7 which is particularly advantageous in that the strap is prevented from slipping longitudinally through the slots. However, it will be apparent that the length of the bit lines may be varied by working or adjustingV the strap through the slots.
Having thus described the invention, what base plate at a point between the keeperA loops, of a strap inserted through the keeper loops and engaged by the tongue, and spring strip secured to the strap and of a length to extend through and between the keeper loops, the said strip holding the strap flatagainst the base plate between the keeper loops, wherebyto retain the strap in engage,- ment with the tongue.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. MGMURRY. [1.. s] lVitnesses:
