XVILLIAM VICKAY, OF STANTON, (DAKOTA TERRITORY,) NORTH DAKOTA.
HlTcHlNc-ANCHOR.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,385, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed September lI 1889. Serial No. 323,522. (No model.)
.To au whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. MCKAY, a citizen of the United States., residing at Stanton, in the county of Mercer and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching-Anchors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention, which is in the nature of an anchoring-piu adapted to be driven into the ground at any desired point in the field or other place to aiord a convenient means for hitching horses, cows, dto., thereto has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and stron g device of this character which may be quickly anchored at any desired place and which may be readily and quickly withdrawn from the ground when it is desired to place it at some other point or carry same away.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and peculiar combination of parts, all ot which will be hereinafter fully described in the annexed specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of myimprovement, showing same in operative position in the ground. Fig. 2is a detail perspective View of the collar or guide-piece. Figs. 3, e, and 5 are detail views hereinafter specifically referred to, and Fig. S is a view of a modification of the vcollar or guide-piece.
In carrying out my invention I employ a circular band or collar A, which I provide in its upper part with apertures a a', arranged one to each side of the center of the collar, and a transverse elongated slot a disposed in the lower part thereof and centrally between the apertures a a.
B B denote the anchoring bolts or pins, each provided with a suitable head b b, the shank portions of which are inserted through the apertures a a and the central slot a, said slot being of a size suiiicient to conveniently allow both Shanks to pass therethrough. By
this arrangement it will be observed that the pins B B are arranged to cross each other diagonally and that as the pins are withdrawn from the collar A they will pull in a direct diagonal iine and always maintain the same relation to each other.
O denotes a ring or loop held in the collar A, to which is secured one end of the animalholding rope or chain D, as shown. After the pins B B are first inserted through the collar A, as described, the lower ends thereof are pointed by hammering the ends and spreading the saine, as at h b', this being done tor the double purpose of; providing the pins with pointed ends and providing the same with enlarged datt-cned ends, which, while allowing the pins to be pulled up through the slot a., will not allow the pins to be withdrawn from the collar through the apertures a a. By reference to Fig. 5 of the drawings it will be seen thatV by this construction the pins may, by turning the collar upside down, be dropped into parallel positions, into acoinpact form for shipping.
The manner of placing my improved hitching anchor or pin in the ground Will be clearly understood by reference to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. The collar or guide A is held to the ground with the pins drawn up, as shown in Fig. 3. One of the pins B is then -driven home, as shown in full lines, Fig. 4,
and then the opposite pin is driven in, as shown by dottedlines in the saine igure. Said pins being driven diagonally into the ground serve to hold the collar securely in place.
When it is desired to remove the device, by
giving one or two sharp jerks on the rope D the pins will be slightly raised and may each then be readily withdrawn.
vIn Fig. 6 I have shown the collar provided with two apertures a2 a2 in the bottom thereof IOO Will'be seen that the same is exceedingly simple' 1n construction and very eiective for its d eslred purpose. It can be conveniently carrled by hand, is light, and can be made by any blacksmith at a very small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I clam), and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, with the collar orband A, provided With apertures d d in its upper portion and a slot a in its lower portion, of the headed bolts or pins B, passed through said apertures a. a and the slot d, whereby said bolts are disposed diagonally to each other, substantially as and forthe purpose described.
V2. The combination, with the collar or band A, provided with apertures d a in its upper face and a transverse slot a in its lower face,
said bolts provided with pointed andenlarged flattened endsb b', substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The hereinbefore -described improvelnentin bitching-anchors, consisting of a band or collar A, provided With apertures a a in its upper part, a transverse slot a in itslower part, disposed centrally between the apertures a a', and the pins or bolts B B, provid ed with heads b b, said pins passed through the said apertures a a and slot a, whereby said pins are disposed crosswise, said pins provided with enlarged and pointedends b b and a ring` or loop C, looselyheld in the collar A, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described. l
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
` XVILLIAM WV. MCKAY.
