CORSET.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK T. \VELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents a view in elevation of one of the two halves of a corset constructed in accordance with my invention.

My invention relates to an improvemen in that class of corsets which are provided with abdominal stays to reinforce those portions of the corset which extend over the abdomen so as to prevent them from stretching, the object of my invention being to impose upon the corset-body, at the front there of, an abdominal stay having a plurality of arms difierentiated in length so as to extend from section to section from the front rearward.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I employ an abdominal stay 2 having three rearwardly extending arms 3, 4

a and 5, of which the arm 4 is longer than the arm 3, and the arm 5 longer than the arm 4, the said arms extending from front rearward at an upward inclination. The entire stay is imposed upon and stitched to the lower portions of the sections 6, 7 and 8 of the corset, but the stitching of the arms 3, 4 and 5 is progressive with the seaming of the sections together. In the first place, the stay 2 is placed upon the section 6 and stitched along its upper edge, and hence along the upper edge of the arm 3. The section 7 is now lapped over the rear edge of the section 6 and over the end of the arm 3 and all are seamed together, whereby the end of the arm is concealed and confined. The arm 4 of the stay is then lapped over the section 7 and stitched along its upper Specification of Letters Patent.

edge, the stitching being carried around the lower edge of the arm 3 which is thus stitched to the section 6. The section 8 is now lapped over the rear edge of the section 7 and hence over the rear end of the arm 4 after which the section 8 is seamed to the section 7 and the end of the section 4 stitched in place. The arm 5 which has meanwhile been folded upon itself, is now laid upon the section 8 and stitched thereto along its upper edge, the stitching being carried around and over the under edge of the arm 4. Then the lower edge of the arm 5 is stitched to the sections 6, 7 and 8. The section 9 of the corset is now lapped over the rear edge of the section 8 and hence over the rear end of the arm 5 and then seamed, the seam thus made securing the end of the arm 5 in place in the same manner as already described for the ends of the arms 3 and 4. Otherwise the corset may be made in any approved manner.

My improved stay as thus constructed and applied is much neater in appearance, and far less clumsy than a solid stay applied directly upon the face of the corset after the seaming of the sections thereof. It will also be observed that my improved abdominal stay as constructed provides an additional thickness of material over the lower ends of the steels or bones 10 whereby the liability of their working through is reduced.

I 'claim The combination with the sections of a corset-body, the said sections being connected together by seams, of an abdominal stay superimposed upon the lower ends of the said sections and having a plurality of arms extending rearwardly and dilierentiated in length according to the width of the sections over which they extend and to which they are stitched, the ends of the arms being extended under the seams between the sections.
