ENVELOP-MOISTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 11, 1911.
Application filed. May 16, 1910. Serial No. 561,631.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KNUT HJERTQUIST, a subject of Sweden, residing at Boone, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Moisteners,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to moisteners, and primarily to that class used especially for moistening the gummed flaps of envelops and the like.
it has in view the designing of a device of this nature whereby the moistener may be adjusted to various angles adapting the same for use with different sized envelop flaps.
For a full understanding of the present invention reference is to be had to the following description, claims, and the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view disclosing the present invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, parts thereof being broken away; Fig. 3 is a cross section thereof.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 10 indicates a sponge retaining box which comprises two hinged sections 11 and 12, the section 12 having an ofi-setextension 13 extending over a portion of the section 11, serving as a guide for the said latter section and covering the joint of the sections. Each section comprises a U-shaped sponge retaining channel 141, said channel being closed at one extremity and having its outer edges bent inwardly creating a gripping flange for retaining the sponge, and the base of the U-shaped channel being extended outwardly forming flanges 15.
ihe handle 16 has one extremity pivotally connected to the section 12 and its opposite extremity having a reduced portion extending through a slot 17, and adapted to operate in the same, the said slot being provided in the section 11. The slot connection of the handle and the section 11 is to be so constructed as to produce friction enough for retaining the sections at various angles.
A reservoir 18 is provided in which the inoistener may be placed when not in use, the flanges 15 forming a bearing for the said mo-istener.
What is claimed as new is 1. An envelop moistener comprising relatively movable sections, absorbent material carried by said sections, and a handle for manipulating the moistener connected with the sections to hold the same, in adjusted positions whereby to permit of use of the device in inoistening flaps of different forms.
2. An envelop moistener comprising sections pivoted together at corresponding ends, absorbent material carried by said sections, and a handle for manipulating the moistener pivotally connected at one end with one of the sections and slidably connected at the opposite end with the other section to hold the sections in adjusted positions.
3. An envelop moistener comprising sections pivotally connected at one end for relative movement, a handle arranged above the pivoted end portions of said sections and pivotally connected at one end with one of the sections, the other section being provided with a slot longitudinally thereof to receive the opposite end of the handle, a fastening frictionally connecting the last mentioned end of the handle to the slotted portion of said slotted section, whereby the sections may be held at a predetermined adjustment by the handle, one of said sections having an extension offset therefrom to over-lap the pivoted end portion of theother section for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
