Be it known that I, DELBERT H. 81.0%, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Meade, in the county of Meade and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moisteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invent-ion relates to new and useful improvements in moisteners, particularly adapted for use in moistening the mucilage on stamps, envelops and other articles, one of the objects of the invention being to provide a device of the character described having means for holding it in position between the fingers of the operator.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which possesses advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

With the above and other objects in view,

the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of my improved moistener showing the same applied to the hand; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the body portion of the device; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the body portion showing a modified form of the device.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates the substantially rectangular-shaped body portion of the device, having a spring wire 2 secured to one end thereof and arranged so as to be disposed between the first two fingers of the hand. The end of the wire 2 is looped and adapted to encircle the wrist as shown at 3. An elongated opening 4 is formed in one side of the body 1, having its side edges bent inwardly to form the flanges 5. A moistening roller 6 is arranged in said opening and has its ends journaled in the bearing lugs 7 formed on the body 1 and arranged at each end of the opening 4.

A dampening sponge 8 is arranged in the body 1 and has its intermediate portion resting on the flanges 5 so that the roller engages with only a small portion of the sponge. One end of the body is hinged as shown at 9 and adapted to swing open to allow the sponge to be removed for dampening or to be replaced by a new one when desired. An arcuate shield 10 is secured to the top of the body 1 and adapted to re-' ceive the end of the thumb, so that the moistener may be easily pushed back and forth over the stamps, envelops or other articles, to moisten the mucilage thereon.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of my device in which the spring wire 2 is eliminated and a small knob 11 is secured to the top of the body and adapted to be grasped by the fingers to manipulate the moistener.

In using my improved moistener the loop 3 of the wire 2 is slipped over the hand and arranged on the wrist; the wire next to the body 1 is inserted in between the first two fingers of the hand so that the body is arranged in front of the forefinger and directly ahead of the thumb. The end of the thumb is then inserted in the shield 10 and the forefinger is arranged along one side of the body, the device being then ready to be manipulated.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body having an elongated opening in one side thereof, a sponge arranged within said body, a moistening roller disposed in said opening and engaging with said sponge, a spring wire secured to one end of the body and adapted to be disposed between the first two fingers of the hand, and a loop formed at the end of said wire and adapted to encircle the wrist of the operator.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a body having an elongated opening in one side thereof, inwardly extending flanges formed on the side edges of said opening, a moistening roller arranged in said opening, a sponge disposed in said body and having its intermediate portion resting on said flanges so that the roller engages with only a small portion of the sponge, a spring wire secured to one end of the body and adapted to be disposed between the first two fingers of the hand, and a loop formed at the end of said wire and adapted to encircle the Wrist of the operator.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a body having an elongated opening in one side thereof, a sponge arranged within said body, a moistening roller disposed in said opening and engaging with said sponge, an arcuate shield secured to the body on the side opposite the roller and adapted to receive the end of the thumb, a spring Wire secured to one end of the body and adapted to be disposed between the first two fingers of the hand, and a loop formed at the end of said wire and adapted to encircle the wrist of the operator.
