, s. J. 1-. PRICE ENVELOPE MOISTENER Filed Nov. 15 1922 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 29, 1924.
J. '1. PRICE, OF AUBURN, ALABAMA.
ENVELOPE MOISTENER.
Application filed November 15, 1922. Serial No. 601,128.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. T. PRICE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Auburn, in the county of Lee and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelope Moisteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for facilitating the sealing of envelopes, the general object of the invention being to provide a sponge holder which is adapted to fit on one of the fingers, and which is provided with a reservoir for supplying water to the sponge.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hook on the device to engage the flap.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. 7 a
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use. 7
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the device.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig ure 2.
As shown in these views the device comprises a tubular member 1 which is adapted to be placed on one of the fingers of the hand of the user, the device having an open end 2 for receiving the finger. The other end is formed with a reservoir 3 for holding water or the like. The top of the device is provided with an enlargement 4 which has a hole 5 therein to receive a sponge 6 or a piece of absorbent material. This sponge is held in place by a flap 7 which is detachably secured to the body of the device so that the sponge or pad can be removed when necessary. A small passage 8 is provided for permitting some of the water in the reservoir to fiow to the sponge. A strip 9 extends from the open end of the device and is adapted to receive a rubber band or string which passes around the finger to hold the device thereon. The device is also provided with a hook 10 for engaging the flap.
From the foregoing 1t will be seen that the device will provide means whereby the ad:-
hesive on an envelope can be moistened so that envelopes can be. sealed very quickly.
The left hand is held open with the back of the hand down. Into the palm of the left hand is pressed several envelopes with the backs of the envelopes down and the tops of the envelopes in the direction of the fingers. The device is placed on the ring finger of the right hand. The article to be inserted is picked up with the right hand and the right hand is brought over the envelope to engage the flap on the top one with the hook on the device and bring it back so that a left and downward motion of the right hand places the contents in the envelope. This left and downward stroke moistens the adhesive on the envelope. The results are that the device opens the envelope for its contents and moistens the ad hesive on the envelope without any additional motion on the part of the operator other than that required to place the letter or circular in the envelope.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a tubular member having a finger receiving opening at one end thereof, a reservoir at the other end thereof, the side of the member having an opening, a pad of absorbent material projecting through said opening, means for permitting some of the water in the reservoir to pass to the pad and a hook on the member for engaging the flap of an envelope.
2. A device of the class described comprising a tubular member having a finger receiving opening at one end thereof, a reservoir at the other end thereof, the side of the member having an opening, a pad of absorbent material projecting through said opening, means for permitting some of the water in the reservoir to pass to the pad, a hook on the member for engaging the flap of an envelope and an extension on the open end of the member for receiving a string or the like to hold the device in place.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
