Be it known that I, HELLMUTH FVER- NER, ofthe city of Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, in the Stateof Vlisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful device forl I full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, which will enable othersA skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification;

rIhe object of iny invention is to furnish -a device by which the articles or instruments carried inthe same are safely and securely held and conveyed in a very small space, and relates to that class of articles which combines a case with a sliding cover, divisions, and the proper appliances for securing the instruments or articles placed therein.

In the accompanying drawings, like letters denote similar parts.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional eleva` tion of my device with cover B closed, showing the position of the wedge-shaped block D. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view oi' my device, near the rounded end. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my complete device with the cover B partially' drawn back, for the purpose of exposing the interior of the case and the manner of the arrangement of the articlesviz., the lead-pencils I I, pen-holder J, the slate-pencil K, pen d, eraser e, ruler H, and the bands E and F securing the same.

A is a straight box-like case, which may be of any preferred or suitable shape and mate rial so long as itlis rigid and non-iiexible, It may be of pasteboarl, wood, metal, dto., and painted, japanned, or covered with cloth or not, as'preferred, with a xed permanent end, T, and au open rounded end, N, fitted with the coverBrunning in the slots or grooves at G G, cut or sunken'in the sides ,of .case A, with the end b b rendered ,flexible by cutting the material used for the cover into narrow strips, and fastening or mounting the same' (No model.)

fiexible or yielding enough to form a hinge, the material used for the hinge being placed upon the inside of the cover B and extending completely across and along the part rendered exible, and over onto the rigid or stiff part of the cover, so that the same is firmly fixed thereto, the cover or `lid B being supplied with the block MQ, attachedto the inside ofthe cover at a point immediately back ofl the first joint of the flexible end and upon the rigid part of the cover or lid B, and of such dimensions that itpasses freely to and fro over the articles in the' case and below the slots or grooves G G until it strikes'tlie pad L, and prevents the cover or lid B from being entirely removed or lost from the case also, suppliedwith the notch Pand the re-enforce end c.

D is a wedge-shaped block, so formed for the purpose of raising the ends of the penholders, pencils, &c., placed in the case to such a position that they can be readily fastened upon and removed from the case, and,

further, t`o leave sufficient room for the articles placed upon the ioor of the case, near the rounded end, beveled at each ,end and supplied with semicircular grooves, as at q 4q q q, which extend the entire length of the same, with an elastic band, E, fastened at sides of the blockand extending over and across the grooves q q q q, and also fastened down between the said grooves q q q q. The block D oase A, with the thickest end toward the .rounded end of the case A, and at a point midway between the ends of the case A, and is of a width that does not entirely cover the bottom of the case, but leaves a small open space between the side of the case A and the block D, for the purpose of forming a socket for the ruler H.
