CARD-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 24, 1911.
Application led March 30, 1910. Serial No. 552,454.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD N. AnDnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in card cases and more particularly to means for detachably securing a pack of cards to a member provided in the case, the object of the invention being to provide simple and effectual means of this character which shall be convenient ih use.
A further object of my. invention is to so attach the cards to th holding means therefor that they shall be protected against injury and soiling and moreespecially at the ends thereof.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended clalms.
My invention will be more readily. understood by reference to th accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a .card case embodying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 isa perspective view showing the case partly open to expose the card securing means therein, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a pack of cards and the means of holding the same in position.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 desig' nates an ordinary card case having a pocket 2 therein for receiving a flap 3. The latter is tapering `in form and is formed integral with the card backing member 4`on which the cards are arranged as shown in the several views. Cement/ed to the flap 3 is a fabric or textile member 5 Iwhich is co-extensive with he width of the backing member 4. The member-5 is provided with a free portion to which the ends of the cards are cemented, white rubber cement bein the preferred cement used. After the car s are arranged on the backing member 4 the ends thereof which are to be attached to the textile member 5 are treated with a suitable grease, white tallow bein preferred. The extent of the greased portion is included between the dotted lines 7, as indicated in Fig.
Cement is now applied to the inner. surface of the free portion of the member 5 when vsaid member is pressed securely against the ends of the cards. This causes the portion of the ends of the cards which are outside of the dotted lines 7 to be firmly cemented to the member 5 while the greased portion will prevent the cement from adhering firmly to said ends. The process is completed by a plying a coat of cement to the exterior si e of thel member 5 which causes'said member to be impregnated with cement. a, l
It has been found that when cement is a plied to' either side of the member 5 e same' is rendered flexible so that the cards may be moved slightly relative to each other without being easily detached from said member. Moreover, when each side of the member 5 is treated with cement the upper edge thereof is prevented from fraying after a part of the cards have been removed. When a card is detached there is substantially no cement adhering to the end thereof which was cemented t0 the member 5, all of the cement remaining on said member.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved card case, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details (if-construction and arrangement of parts described Without departing from the spiritof my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims. l
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a pack of cards, of an end member cemented to the ends of said cards at their sides only the central portions of said cards bein tially as described. l
2. The combination with a pack of cards, of an'end fabric member cemented to the ends of said cards at .their sides only, the central portions of said cards being free, and said fabric member being also provided with cement on its -back portion substantia'lly as described. 4
3. The combination with a casing provided with a pocket, a card backing member` having a flap inserted in said pocket, a textile member secured to said flap and having a free portion cemented to the ends of said k free, substancards, there being White grease applied to In testimony whereof I have signed my the central portions 0f the ends of said nume to this spemfimtlon m the prenve nl' cards Where they are cemented to said textwo subscribing witnesses.
