LOUIS S. ADELSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ARTICLE-RETAINING MEANS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs S. ADELsoN, a citizen of the -United States, residing at New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Article-Retaining Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to article retaining means, and refers more specifically, to means for retaining such articles as plumes and feathers, whereby the latter may be displayed, or shipped any desired distance without becoming damaged.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an article retaining device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, which may be produced at a minimum cost, and which may be stamped out of a single metal blank in one operation.
Other objects and advantageous features of the invention, and its detail structure will be clearly described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure l, is a perspective View of my improved device; and Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional View thereof, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the drawing, the device consists, essentially, of two principal parts, viz :a base member 1, and a preferably tubular retaining member 2, the latter being adjustable in relation to the former, and the two members being integral, this feature resulting from the fact that the entire device is stamped out of a single metal blank. The base member is generally provided with orifices 3, through which means may be passed to secure the retaining member as a whole to a display or shipping box or other-suitable support.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 22, 1910.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Serial No. 578,406.
In producing a retaining device such as that illustrated, the blank is cut so as to leave the rectangular opening 4 and the material thus cut from the blank is then rolled about a mandrel or other tool to produce the tubular retaining member 2. The material of which the member 2 is formed is not entirely cut away from the blank, but remains connected thereto by a relatively narrow strip of metal 5, which is sufficiently flexible to permit of the member 2 being adjusted, at will, in relation to the base member 1. The retaining member 2 is preferably provided with a longitudinal slit as at 6, whereby the diameter of the tube may be varied to admit different sized shafts of plumes and feathers, and if desired, the tube may be tightly closed about such shafts to retain the same firmly therein.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture, an article retaining device formd from a single metal blank and consisting of a base member having a substantially oblong portion cut from the body thereof and formed into a longitudinally slotted tubular article holder, the edges of said tubular holder being substantially straight and movable toward and from each other whereby the diameter of said tubular holder may be varied, said tubular holder being flexibly connected to one of the inner edges of said base member.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS S. ADELSON.
