Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY E. BLAN CI-IARD, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roll Supports for Spinning, Twisting, or like Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exct description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The present invention relates to improvements in devices for supporting the top carrier rolls used in spinning, twisting, or like machines.
Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a roll support that will be very strong and durable and will thereby overcome some of the objectionable weaknesses in devices hitherto employed for the same purpose; to provide a roll support that will efiiciently hold the rolls in their proper places and accurately position the same, and to provide, also, a support having easy and accurate adjustments, thereby providing for a satisfactory adjustable retention of the rolls.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a construction made up of a variety of assembled parts and especially parts made of rolled steel of standard stock and which require no special preformation, and possessing the further advantage that any of the parts, especially those subject to wear, may be hardened, or any of the parts may be replaced without dificulty.
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents in side elevation a roll stand provided with a top roll support embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the roll support and top rolls supported thereby, with portions thereof broken away. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. at is a section on the line H of Fig. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a portion of the device to which special reference will hereinafter be made, and Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, 1 represents the roll support upon which are mounted the bottom rolls and of which 2 represents the front roll, 3 the middle and 4 the back roll, As is customary the middle and back rolls are supported in and between the adjustable parts 5 of the stand to permit adjustment or variation in the distance between the front and middle rolls. Upon the adjustable parts 5 of the stand is mounted the roll support comprising my invention and which operates to position the top rolls 6, 7 and 8, respectively. The roll support is constructed as follows, in which connection it will be understood that the support is capable of holding and positioning a plurality of series of top rolls, only one series, however, being shown for purposes of illustration.
9 represents a carrier bar which preferably consists of a rolled channel bar of inverted U shape. This bar is interposed between the adjustable portions 5 of the stand and pivotally secured thereto in a manner to be later explained. Secured to this bar and projecting laterally therefrom are fingers 10. These fingers are preferably rolled bars rectangular in cross section and provided with downturned end portions which enter holes 11 formed in the head of the carrier bar and engage the inner surfaces of the sides of this bar to which the fingers are secured by welding or in any other suitable manner.
Each finger has adjustably mounted thereon an extension 12. These extensions are preferably rolled bars of uniform cross section and are mounted upon the respective fingers to longitudinally extend the same. The fingers 10 and extensions 12 thereof opcrate to retain and position the top rolls for which purpose the bars are separated from one another a suhicient distance so that the top rolls may be interposed to turn between adjacent fingers and their extensions.
Secured to each of the fingers 10 are flanged metal pieces or strips which extend along and above the respective fingers and perform the double function of guiding the extensions 12 and forming bearings for the middle and back top rolls '7 and 8, respectively. Of these pieces or strips the one 13 is provided with a flange 16, the one 14: with flanges 17 and 18 and the one 15 with a flange 19. The flanges 16 and 17 provide open bearings for the back roll 8; the flanges 18 and 19 open. bearings for the middle roll 7.

The circular part of the stud is adapted to enter an open slot 28 in the portion of the stand. (See Fig. 1.)
Practically all of the parts entering into the construction of the support are of standa rd commercial shapes, Thus the carrier l ar 9, fingers l0 and extensions 12 are commercial rolled liars or rods of uniform cross section throughout, While the various strips or pieces secured to the fingers and their extensions are of ordinary sheet metal. iii-tiny of the parts may he hardened to resist Wear, and especiall those sheet metal parts which provide hea for the top rolls.

A support for top rolls of the character specified, the same having a carrier bar of uniform cross section, fingers of uniform cross section secured thereto and projecting therefrom, extensions to said fingers of unifor-1n cross section adjustahly mounted thereon, flanged sheet metal strips secured to said fingers and forming in part guideways for said extensions and in other part hearings for a portion of said rolls, flanged sheet metal pieces secured to said extensions and forming hearings for other of said rolls, and means for adjustably securing said extensions to said fingers.
6. A support for top rolls having a channel bar of uniform cross section with holes therein, spaced fingers secured to said bar to project therefrom, said fingers being formed to extend through the holes in said bar and engage the interior thereof, and
