. UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
DANIEL M. SOMERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
eSgpeciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. l30,670, dated August 20, 15572.
Specification describing an Improvement in Pen -Holders, the invention of DANIEL M. SoMERs, ofthe city ot' Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York.
This invention relates to pen-holders of the description known in the trade as drawn or solid-tube holders, and consists in a novel means of uniting the nib with the tube of the holder by means of an eyelet formed in or ot.
i section of the same, looking in a direction of right angles to the former figure; Fig. 3, a similar view ofthe tube of the holder before the eyelet is formed in it; and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section ofthe nib detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several gures ofthe drawing.
A is the drawn or solid. tube of the holder, and B the nib. The tube A has first an indentation,` a, Fig. 3, stamped in it from the outside t0 prepare it for the production of the eyelet, which is to unite the nib with the tube,
and the nib B has a hole, b, Fig. 4, formed in in it for the passage of the eyelet through it. After the tube and nib have. been thus prepared, the latter, which may be constructed with the usual longitudinal slit, c, in it to give elasticity, is iitted to its place in the tube, with the hole b opposite to the indentation a'. A suitable die is then introduced within the nib and a punch brought to bear upon the outside, over or within the indentation a, which produces the eyelet d, seen in Figs. l and 2, thus uniting' the rib with the tube. Said eye let d not only gives a neater or more ornamental appearance to the holder than does a rivet for unitingtthe rib With the tube, but simpler mechanism for producing it may be used,
and being formed out of the tube itself', themanipulation is easier than when a separate small rivet requires to be inserted. Such eyelet also is equally or more secure than a rivet, and considerably firmer than teats punched up from the inside tounite the nib with the tube.
YVliat is here claimed and desired to be socured by Letters Patent, is
The eyelet d, formed in or of one piece, )Vith the tube A, in combination with the nib B, having a hole, b, in it for passa-ge of said eyelet, substantially as specified.
