Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RANsoM E. STRAIT, or GALESBURQMIGHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLows. i
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 98,120, dated December 2l, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, It. E. STRAIT, of Galesburg, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specincation.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a plow, but more particularly ,in the construction of the plow-beam, andin the construction and attachment of a rotary wheel mold-board, whereby a plow of easy draft is obtained and I am enabled to leave the earth where plowed in a more loose and better condition for the purpose intended.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the plow. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rotating whel mold-hoard, showing the box in which it revolves, the cap of said box heilig removed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of said cap.
A represents the plow-beam, which is composed of two metal bars suitably curved and fastened together by bolts or other suitable means. The rear portions of' the two bars forming the plow-beam are not fastened together, but bent at different angles, as seen in Fig. 1, and to their lower ends the laudside B is attached. The handles C C are also attached to said bars, as well as to the landside, and are braced by braces D D from a suitable point on the plow-beam.
At a suitable height on the mold-board side of the plow-beam A., and connected with the handles C C, is secured a horizontal platform, a, which is provided with a curvedgroovc on its upper side. On the-platform a is placed a box., b, the peculiar construction of which is plainly shown in Fig. 2. This box is on its under side provided with acurved flange or projection which fits in the groove above mentioned on the platform a, aud the box is secured to said platform by means of a bolt which passes through elongated slots both in the box and platform, and is fastened bya nut on the upper side. The box b forms thejournal-box for a shaft, 0,011 the outer end of which is secured a disk, E, which forms the rotating wheel mold-board. Below this wheel moldboard the usual mold-board, or rather the lower portion of the usual mold-board, is suitablyat-` provided with an elongated slot for that pur l pose. By means of the slots mentioned the box b and wheel mold-board can be moved closer to or farther from the plow-beam, and
secured by the bolt at any pointdesired. Ou
the inner side of the disk E, around the shaft c, is a rim, e, which projects around the outer end of that portion ot' the box b and its cap.
that forms tl1ejurnalbox for said shaft. The wheel mold-board is for the purpose of turning the furrow. being of easier draft, and leaves the ground in better condition than in the usual way.
Attached to the cap d is a scraper, f, which embraces the upper edge of the wheel moldboard, and is moved with the box, soas to correspond with the changing of the wheel, and thus always be in position to clean the wheel of any adhering dirt.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. rlhe slotted platform a, provided with a curved groove on its upper side, substantially as and for the purposesV herein set forth. i
2. The box b and cap d, constructed as described, and made adjustable upon the platferm a, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The disk E, provided with shaft c and rim e, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination and arrangement of the plow-beam A, landside B, handles C C, braces D D, platform a, box b, Wheel mold-board E, and scraper f, all constructed as described, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim 'the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. t
