J. WHEELER.
WHEEL PLOW.
No. 335,492. Patented Feb. 2, 1886.
Zizvezeioz a MM JESSE \VHEELER, OF BROWVNSVILLE,
MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONEIIALF TO E. S. WEST, OF SAME PLACE.
WHEEL-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,492, dated February 2, 1886.
Application filed June 18, 1885. Serial No. 169,024. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEssE WHEELER, of Brownsville, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Cultivators or WVheel- Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make [0 and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in cultivators or wheelplows.
The object of my invention is to provide a cultivator or wheel-plow with an extensible or adjustable axle, the wheel thereof being provided with a band or rim, which can be thrown out of contact with the furrow for the purpose of crushing and pulverizing the soil.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the axle, showing the sleeve and braces. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one of the wheels with the rim or band attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the band or rim.
The letter D represents the tongue of my improved cultivator or sulky-plow; N, the plow; I, the wheels, and L and M the operating-levers thereof.
a denotes the extensible or adjustable axle, having the braces a and (4 attached by means of clips to the outer end of the axle, their inner ends secured to the frame-work and tongue of the sulky in any suitable manner. These braces are movable to or from the body of the plow by means of slide a" on the top portion of the axle.
The letter a designates the thimble or sleeve, secured by clips to the under side of the axle, whereby the axle is rendered extensible or adjustable for the purpose of throwing the wheel out of contact with furrow onto the 50 plowed ground, the object of which will be hereinafter explained.
B is the rim or band, made of any suitable material and having on its inner surface cleats b, b, and b, the former of which are provided with elongated slots 0, which engage bolts or pins 0, rigidly secured near one edge or meeting end of the band or rim. These cleats and bolts serve the purpose of securing the band to the rim of the wheel, and the slots allow said band to expand and contract when fitted to the wheel. The object of this band or rim is for the purpose of crushing or pulverizing the soil when the axle is extended or adjusted to throw the wheel out of the furrow, as hereinbefore set forth.
I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise construction of my invention as herein described, as I may deviate from the same without departing from the true spirit thereof.
In my construction of an axle for wheel plows or cultivators I attach thereto the simple means consisting of a sleeve, braces, and a slide, whereby said axle is easily rendered extensible and adjustable to any point desired; also, in my construction of the band for wheel plows or cultivators, I attach said band to the rim of a wheel by means of cleats secured on the under surface of the band, the cleats attached to the meeting ends of the band provided with elongated slots, whereby said band is adapted to expand when being placed on the rim or tire of the wheel and contracts after being placed thereon.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A wheel plow or cultivator having an axle provided with a sleeve and braces, the inner ends of said braces secured to the frame and tongue of the plow, the outer ends of which are connected to the end of the axle by means of a clip and slide, whereby said axle is extensible and adjustable, as shown and described. 5
2. The combination, with a sulky plow or cultivator, of the adjustable axle, the band on the rim of the wheel, and the sliding braces on the axle, as shown and described, and 'for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a sulky plow or cultivator, of an axle having the sliding ICO braces connected thereto and to the tongue shown and described, and for the purpose set and frame, a sleeve for extending the axle, I forth. and a band on the rim of the wheel provided In testimony that I claim the foregoing as with slots, bolts and cleats, as shown and demy own I have hereto affixed my signature in scribed, and for the purpose set forth. presence of two witnesses.
4. The combination with a wheel plow or cultivator, having a wheel provided on its JESSE WHEELER rim or tire with an adjustable broad band or Witnesses: rim, of a supplementary axle; whereby said WV. H. REAVIS,
IO wheel, with its band, is rendered adjustable, as l E. H. ANDREW.
