DRESS-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 1911.
Application filed May 23, 1910. Serial No. 562,847.
struction of dress frame upon which a dress skirt and waist may be readily mounted and retained in desirable condition for wear ,to
so construct my improved dress frame as to admit of one portion thereof being telescoped within the other, the upper portion of the skirt being thus incased by the waist; to provide an improved dress frame which will admit of the retention of the waist and skirt of a dress in such compact form and arrangement as to admit of the dress and frame being packed in a comparatively short shipping or packing case, without producing undesirable creases or wrinkles in the dress and obviating the necessity of the garment being pressed or ironed previous to wear, and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Flgure 1 is a front view of a dress supported by my improved frame, when tl1e.lat ter is in its extended position, Fig. 2 is a side-elevation of. the frame, showing the same in its extended position in full lines and in its closed position in dotted lines, Fig. .1 is a rear elevation of the frame show ing the same in its closed position in full lines and in its extended position in dotted lines, Fig. 1 is a central longitudinal section through the frame with a dress skirt and waist mounted thereon and showing the frame in its extended position, and, Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the frame in its closed position.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a comparatively narrow lower frame section, which comprises parallel bars 1, the lower ends of which are connected on their forward sides by a transverse plate or board 2, which is preferably of straw-board or other similar material, but which may be formed of wood or other material, if desired. This lower end plate or board is of a general oblong form and has its end ortions extending beyond the outer sides 0 the bars 1, with which it is connected. The upper end portions of the bars 1, are connected on their rear sides by a cross bar 3, the ends of which extend slightly beyond the sides of said bars 1, and said bars 1 are further connected in their upper portions by a transverse plate 1 which extends on the forward sides ofsaid bars 1 and is of greater length than the bar 3.
---'In addition. to the elongated frame which comprises the bars 1 and its connections as described, I employ a shorter box-like waist frame, which comprises two pairs of paral' lel side frame members or bars 5, the ends of which are connected by parallel transverse frame bars 6. The side frame bars 5 are connected throughout their lengths by a comparatively thin strip or plate 7, which strips form the opposing sides of said boX- like frame. I also provide between the outer and inner or upper and lower transverse frame members 6, parallel connecting bars 8. The forward side or face of the waist frame thus formed, is covered by a shield or front plate 9 which has the general form of a waist front and which is bowed outwardly from the upper and lower forward frame bars 6 with which it is connected, to impart to the waist frame a substantially bust form. In its upper half, the opposing side edge portions of the shield or front plate 9, are formed with curved or rounded recesses 9 as shown. It will also be observed that the central portion of the shield 9, projects above the frame members 6.
In effecting a desirable sliding engagement of the lower or skirt frame which comprlses the bars 1 and its connections, and the upper or waist frame last described, it will be understood that the upper portions of the bars 1 are adapted to extend through the lower end of the waist end of the waist frame, said bars 1 lying adjacent to the inner sides of the frame bars 8, the extended end portions of the top cross bar 3 hearing slidably against the rear faces of the bars 8, and the transverse plate or board 4 bearing against the forward faces of said bar 8. In this manner, it is obvious that the upper or waist frame, may be lowered or moved inward on the skirt frame until the bar 3 comes into contact with the rear upper bar 6. In a like manner, the upward movement of the waist frame is limited by a contact of the lower side of the bar 3 with the rear lower bar 6. p
In utilizing my invention, it will be understood that the upper box-like frame described, is designed to have draped thereon and to inclose a dress waist such as is indicated at 10,- the front of said waist being draped over the outwardly bowed front plate 9 and the rear portion of the waist body being united at the back of the frame. It will also be understood that the waist may be detachably fastened in connection with the plate 9, by being temporarily sewed thereto at desirable points.
In effecting a connection of the skirt with the lower frame, which comprises theconnected members 1, the waistband portion of the skirt 11 isifastenf readily detachable mannr, to ti plate or board 4:, from w ich'the sk pends on the outer sides of the rame bers 1, the lower end portion of the skirt being in a like manner detachably sewed or otherwise connected with the lower portion of the frame plate2. The waist and skirt beingthus connected with theslidably connected frames, it is obvious that the skirtframe may be moved upward in the waist frame until the frame sections are in the contracted form indicated in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawing By this operation, it will readily be understood that a considerable portion of the dress skirt, will be incased within the waist and that this shortening of the combined skirt and waist, will be accomplished without folding, creasing or doubling the goods, thereby insuring the retention of the dress members in a. desirable condition for immediate wear.
It will be understood that the device which Ihave shown and described herein, is particularly adapted for the packing, carrying or shipping of-burial dresses such as are ordinarily furnished by undertakers, al-
though it is evident that 'the devi'ce may beused in themanner described as a contracted support for dresses which are being packed or shipped for any purpose.
From'the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efiicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are Well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, itis to be understood that the in vention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but lllfil l'jbe Within its purview such changes as :n be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is"
1. In an adjustable dress frame, the combination with a frame section adapted to be 'inclosed by a waist, of a longer second frame section slidably connected with said first mentioned frame section, and means connected with said second frame section for engaging a dress skirt and carrying a porrtion of said skirt into the waist frame sec- ;tioi when said sections are telescoped toght er.
" 2 'Ina device of the character described,
the combination with a frame section comprising connected frame bars, and a front plate connected with said frame, of a second frame section having a limited sliding movement within said first named frame section, and means for securing a dress skirt thereon.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame section comprising connected frame bars, and an outwardly bowed front plate connected with said frame, of a second frame section hav-, ing a limitedsliding movement within said first named frame section, and means for securing adress skirt thereon. a
4.. In a device of the character described,
"the combination with a waist supporting frame comprising an oblong frame bddy and an outwardly-bowed front plate, of a second frame of less width than said waist frame, said second frame having a' limited sliding movement Within said first mentioned frame, and a transverse plate at the base of said second frame.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
