BED-COUCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 657,469, dated September 4,1900. Application filed February 20.1900. Serial No. 5.922. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bed-Conch, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in bed-couches, and the object is to provide a device of this character that may be quickly and easily changed from a couch to a bed of a desired width and as readily changed from bed to couch form.

I will describe a bed-couch embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The couch comprises end frames, each consisting of the side bars 4, connected at the top by a cross-piece 5 and terminating at the lower end in legs 6, to which casters may be attached, as indicated in the drawings. The lower portions of the parts 4 are connected by cross-bars 7. Side bars 8 connect the opposite end frames, which may be of L or angle iron. The end frames have'brace connections 9 with the side bars 8.

Mounted to swing on opposite sides of the couch are side extensions, each consisting of end arms 10, pivotally connected to the top or cross bars 5, and the two arms 10 of aside are connected one with the other by a tierod 11. A wire or spring mattress 12 extends overthe top of the couch and also across the swinging side portions, as plainly indicated.

Supporting-bars 13 are pivotally connected to the arms 10, and they are movable through and guided in slots 14, formed in the side portions 4 of the end frames.

Extended lengthwise of the couch at opposite sides are rock-shafts 15, designed to he engaged with the ends of the sup porting-bars 13, to hold the side extensions in their elevated position, as indicated at the right-hand side of Fig. 2. The rock-shafts 15 are connected at their ends to plates 16, pivoted to the bars 7, and have portions 17 extended outward and upon which a person may place his foot to disengage the bars 13 from the shafts. The plates 16 have spring connections 18 with the leg portions 6 of the end frames. p

In operation when it is desired to change the couch into bed form either one or both of the side extensions may be raised, depending, of course, upon the width desired for the bed. As the side extension is raised the support lug-bars 13 will fall with their ends into engagement with the rock-shaft 15 at, that side of the couch where the extension is raised. When it is desired to lower the extension, a down ward pressure on the plate 17 at either end of the couch will rock the plate 16, cansing fingers 19 thereon to move the ends of the bars 13 out of engagement with the rockshaft. Then the extension will fall by gravity and the plates 16 will be moved to their normal position by means of the springs.

While I have shown an extension at each side of the couch, it is to be understood that only one side thereof need be provided with a swinging extension. 1
