EDWARD C. FISHER, OF LINCOLN, ILLINOIS.
DAVENPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1%,1913.
Application filed December 26, 1911. Serial No. 667,873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. FIsr-rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, county of Logan, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Davenports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to davenports and particularly to folding davenp-orts adapted when in one position to be used as a bed or couch.
The object of my invention is to provide a folding davenport as mentioned which shall be positivel locked in the position when used as a cavenport by any weight upon the seat port-ion.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device as mentioned which may be readily changed from one position to another, that is, from a davenport to av couch or vice versa.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lVit-h these objects in view my invention consists generally in a stationary frame portion and a pair of hingedly connected portions connected to the stationary frame by arms or links whereby one of said portions shall constitute the seat and the other the back when used as a davenport and the parts extended when desired to form a couch, and means on the seat portion adapted to engage the stationary frame and positively lock the parts against movement when there is weight upon the seat.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of a davenport embodying my invention, a portion thereof being broken away and shown in section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the device showing the parts in the position when used as a couch.
Referring now to the drawings, the stationary or main frame of the device comprises the end frames 11 connected by longitudinal frame members 2-2. The end frames may be either of wood or metal and of any desired construction. As shown in the drawings they are formed of the bent metal tube such as is commonly used in devices of this character and the members 2 are fiat bars riveted or otherwise secured to the members 1.
3 indicates a horizontal bar connecting the leg portions of each frame 1.
The body of the device comprises two hingedly connected portions 1 and 5 which constitute the seat and back respectively of the device when used as a davenport. The portions 4 and 5 are similar and each consists of a pair of end members 6 rigidly connected by a pair of longitudinally extending rods or bars 7. The end members 6 are preferably angle irons and the springs, which are not shown but which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction, are secured to the horizontal flanges 8 thereof. The inwardly extending flanges 8 are hingedly connected as indicated at 9. The members or bars 7 are arranged adjacent the ends of the members 6 and are arched downwardly below the lower edges of the end members 6, and are spaced apart, on the seat portion particularly, so as to fit snugly between the longitudinal members 2 of the main frame, with the lower edges of the projecting ends 10 of the seat portion resting on the upper edges of the members 2.
11 indicates a link or arm hingedly connected to the frame member 3 and to the adjacentmember 6 of the seat frame, and 12 a link or arm hingedly connected at substantially the center of the upper portion of the end members 1 and to the end members of the back portion. The links 12 are curved downwardly as indicated in order to project a. minimum distance above the ends 1 when the back is raised. The link 11 is connected adjacent the center of the members 3 and toward the rear of the members 6 so that in swinging forwardly it will tend to lift the seat 4.
To extend the device for use as a couch it is but necessary to raise the forward edge of the seat and pull the same forwardly. The portion 4 will rest upon the front member 2 and the portion 5 will rest upon the rear member 2. To raise the back it is but necessary to push rearwardly upon the seat portion, the links 12 raising the back and the links 11 raising the seat sufficiently to permit the front member 7 to be readily passed over the member 2 after which the device will drop of it own weight so as to lock the bars 7 between the members 2.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, a main frame comprising end members and a pair of longitudinal members connecting the same, a seat portion comprising end members and a pair of bars connecting said end members, said bars being arched below the lower edges of said end members and adapted to fit between the longitudinal members of the main frame, and engage the inner faces of the same simultaneously when the seat end members are resting on said longitudinal frame members a backhinged 1 In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
