FRUIT JAR. 1

THOMAS ni'diieHToN .AND HENRY H. HoUeHToN, or PHILADELPHIA.,v PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 97,922, dated December'lt, 1869.V
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
The Schedule rean-ed to in these Letters Patent 'and making part o! the same.
To all `whom item1/:concerns Be it known 'that wc, THOMAS HoUGHToN and HENRY LL HO'UGHTON', of the city and county of Philadelphia, and Stuteof Pennsylvania, have invented a new und useful Improvement in Fruit-Jars;
and-'we do .hereby declare the following to be a full,
' clear, and exact description of the same, suiiicent to enable others skilled A tiouuppertuins, to nmke and use the same, reference in the' nrt to which our invenbeing had to the accompanying tlr,\ving,.foimng part ofthis specification, and' illustrative of' ourV invention. to an endless band, which-has a bearing below inclines on n' shoulder formed'on `the' body, vor below the dome of the jur, so that when thecap or 'cover is placed on the neck of the jn-r, and the `buil swung on said cup, pantin] rotation of the band will tighten the bail and hold the cap-firmly i-n position.
In the drawings?- i A represents the body of avjur, which may be mode of suitable form und material, and with u. rounded bottoni, a, and pedestnls, B, as desired.
O represents the neck of the jan-which'is of' ordinary form and construction,'and on it is `placed n. cup or cover D, which Vis likewise of ordinary construction,
excepting that it may have u rounded top, and in the centre of which isn slight depression, b.
The upper part o1' dome L of the jar, is widerthan the lower port, and overhungs' it so as to leave un un der shoulder, M, having inclines E, which are of form well known in the class of preserve-'ois On the jor we slip an endless band, F, 'and provide g nn upward bearing for itagainst the lower sides' of the lnclines E. l
G representsn bail, which is hinged at two points to the bond F; and adopted to swing freely on its bearings. Y
The middle of the buil is bent thedepression b of cap l).
It is desirable that the upper edge of the band F should correspond with the so that the part c of the former should come against part cl of the hitter, and thereby form astop to limit the rotation of the b21-nd in the direction ot' the arrow 1.
The operation is as follows:
downwiud to enter` inclines on shoulders E,
The band F is slipped over the body of the jar from its bottom,-ztnd brought up against the shoulder M, with the parts -c d in contact. Nowfswing up the bail G nnd'place it on cir-UD. 'i A partial rotation ofthe bond F, in direction of arrow 2, causes the b zmd to `slide downward, owing to the function ot' the inclines E, thereby drawing the bail G withit, and consequently tightening cap D.
It `will be noticed that the central part of thebail G, during'the rotation of the band, has a. bearing in the depression of cap D. t
The band can be rotated before or after the steam .and hot air have escaped from the jar.
The cap D .is permitted to arise when the parts c d" are in contact, for then the bail G does 'not bear tightly against the carp.
`When the cup or cover is tightened, the band bears l Afirmly against the inclines, which, in return, are strong and durable, und'prevent :my slipping of the bund.
All chipping and breaking are avoided, since the band andbuil do not come iu contact with the outer edges of the shoulder M. r
When shoulders are blown on jars, they become at times quite thin, and the Well known bail, hooking un der the' inclined planes, is apt to breuk said shoulders, hut by .the use of-my endless band, the pressure is equally distributed on the shoulder M.
I-u the present ease, the jftrtapers''om the-shoulder M, or lower'. edge of dome, to its bottom, in order to readily odmit the band.
The amount of pressure Yon the copD is regulatedby the degree of rotation olf said band.
Hai-'ing thus described our invention,
.What we claim as new, und desire `to secure by Letl ters Patent, isl
Theband l"with bevelledor inclined edge, and the bail G hinged thereto, in combination with the overhanging dome L, having :in inclined bearing-surface for si'td band, substantially as and for the purpose 11e-' scribed,
To the above, we have signed our names, tb1s22d day of July, 1869.
THOMAS HOUGHTON.
