UNITED- STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JACOB GULDEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MsTARD-BOTTLE sroPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,683, dated May 1, 11883.
Application filed September 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB GULDEN, ot' New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improved Stopper for Mustard-Bottles, of which the following isa specification.
Figure l is a vertical central section of my improved stopper for mustard-bottles. Fig. 2 is a similar section ot' the same, showing the plug portion removed. Fig.3 is a plan or top view ofthe same; Fig. 4 a side view, and Fig. 5 a bottom view, of the same.
The object of this invention is to produce a stopper formustard-bottles which shall hold the contents properly confined as long as the bottle has not yet been opened, and which, when the bottle, has been opened, can be converted into a partial stopper, leaving room, however, for the spoon by which the contents are removed.
The invention consists principally in vmak-` ing the stopper-body with a notch nearits pe riphery, and in fitting into that notch a plug which closes it, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The invention also consists in combining with said stopper and plug a rubber strap or packing which holds the plug in place and the stopper tight. Y
1n the accompanying drawings, the letterA represents a suitable mustard-bottle.
Bis the stopper, made of suitable outline, but preferably with a fiange, ,'at the upper part, which flan ge overlaps the top of the mnstard-bottle. The stopper-body Bis circular; V
but at one part of its periphery it is cutaway, forming a notch, b. Into this notch is placed a removable plug, d, which may be made of wood, cork, glass, or any other suitable material, and which plug, when in place, completely fills the notch in the lower part of the stopper and completes the circular structure of the stopper-body. A rubber strap or other packing-ring, e, is placed around the stopper-body and plug d, holding the latter in place in said notch.
When the bottle is filled with mustard and ready to be shipped or stored, the stopper, with the plug in it, and with the strap c around the plug and stopper, is placed into the bottle, as shown in Fig. l, and in this condition the contents ofthe bottle will be protected against the influx of air, or otherinjurious contact with outside matter. As soon as the consumer opens the bottle the strap o maybe thrown away, and also the plug d, and the notch b will then serve to admit the spoon C, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim- 1. The bottle-stopper B, having peripheral' notch b, in combination Withplug d, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The bottle stopper B, having peripheral notch b, combined with plug d and packingring o, substantially as described.
