To all whom it nmy concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH FELDMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bottle- Stopper, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

One purpose of the invention is to provide a stopper especially adapted for beer-bottles, and which will effectually seal the mouth of a bottle, no matter to what extent the said mouth may be chipped or broken.

A further purpose of the invention is to so construct the stopper that the stopper and its attached gasket will enter the mouth of the bottle to a much greater extent than similar stoppers that have been ordinarily employed for the same purpose, the gasket itself having bearing against the inner face of the neck of the bottle from the upper edge to some distance within the neck.

Another purpose of the invention is to provide such an opening for the hail of the stopper that the bail may be readily and conveniently placed in connection with the stopper, and whereby should the stopper under any circumstances become loosened the bail may be shifted in its receiving-opening in the stopper to such an extent as to crowd the stopper in the neck of the bottle in a manner to effectually prevent the escape of gases or the possible escape of liquid.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the neck of a bottle and through the improved stopper, the stopper being shown as simply resting on the upper edge of the neck. Fig. 2 is a section similar to Fig. l, the stopper being shown as forced down to place in the neck of the bottle; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

A represents the neck of a bottle, 13 a lever connected with the neck of the bottle by a neck-ring O, and D a bail which is pivotally fers from others of its kind, inasmuch as the improved stopper or plugE comprises ahead 10 and a shank 11, and where the said shank connects with the head an annular concaved shoulder 12 is formed, as shown particularly in Fig. l. A gasket or washer E, of rubber or a like material, is secured to the shank of the stopper E near the bottom portion thereof, and the said shank ll of the stopper or plug E is of such length that when the lever Bis pressed downward and the stopper E through the medium of the bail D is carried within the neck of the bottle the stopper will extend some distance within said neck below the mouth thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, thus causing the gasket E to have a firm contact with the inner face of the neck of the bottle some distance below its month, while the upper edge of the gasket E is held in engagement with the mouth of the neck of the bottle by the concaved annular shoulder 12. Thus when the stopper or plug is seated at the mouth and neck of the bottle the gasket not only closes the mouth of the bottle, but likewise effectually seals a great portion of the neck below the mouth, and um der these conditions it will be observed that should the mouth of the bottle become chipped or broken to a greater or less extent when the plug or stopper is in place in the neck the bottle will still be perfectly sealed and the escape of gases and liquid will be prevented.

The head of the stopper is provided with an opening F, extending through from side to side and through which a loop of the bail D may be conveniently passed. This opening F consists of a horizontal section 13, eX- tending an equal distance beyond a line drawn vertically through the center of the stopper, and an upper central concaved section 14: and a corresponding lower concaved section 14 The side walls of the horizontal section 13 of the opening F, as shown in Fig. 3, are inclined from the center outward in opposite directions, so that the direction of the bail passed through the opening F may be changed. or shifted from one side to the other, as illustrated in Fig. 1. TVhen such an opening F is provided in a stopper, the bail 1) may not only be readily passed through the opening,

but the bail may be shifted, so as to occupy give to any extent the stopper may still be firmly seated in the neck of the bottle by causing the bail D to occupy the diagonal po-' sition shown in Fig. 3, at which time the bail will rest upon the elevated lower walls of the horizontal section 13 of the opening F in the stopper.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A bottle-stopper provided with a horizontal elongated opening extending through it, said opening having its side walls inclined outwardly from the center toward each side, and its bottom wall formed with a central depression, as set forth.

2. A bottle-stopper provided with an elongated opening extending through from side to side, which opening comprises a horizontal section and concaved opposing upper and lower sections at the center of the horizontal section, the walls of the horizontal section inclining outwardly from the center toward each side, for the purpose set forth.

3. A bottle-stopper comprising a head and a shank which is adapted to extend some distance within the neck of a bottle below the duced therein, comprising a horizontal section and upper and lower opposingconcaved central sections, the walls of the horizontal section inclining from a central point in opposite directions, whereby a bail passed through the said opening may be placed in a diagonal position and rest upon the bottom of the horizontal section, the bail normally resting in the lower concaved section of the said opening,for the purpose-described.
