Description
. M. MONETTI. GUARD FOR SAFETY RAZORS.
APPLICATION mum APB..12,1910.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
WITNESSES:
MICHAEL MONETTI, 0F BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
GUARD FOR SAFETY-RAZORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Application filed April 12, 1910. Serial No. 555,016.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL MoNn'r'rI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-' scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a guard that is adapted to be placed on a razor to provide a safety attachment for the razor, andis one which is adapted to be adjustable so that as the razor is worn away by honing and stropping, the guard can be adapted to have the same relative position to the cutting edge.
The device permits of a guard being fastened to the blade of an ordinary razor, the guard to be fitted to either one or both sides of the razor blade and to be secured to a clip which in turn is adjustably secured to the backedge of the razor, the means for fastening the guard in its adjustable position also serving as a means for securing the clip to the razor blade.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows a razor combined with the guard in place. Fig. 2 is an end View of the blade with the guard attached on a slightly larger scale than the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clip, and Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of guard.
The invention is adapted to be attached to any form of blade 10, which is of the usual type, provided with a handle 11 which is pivoted to the shank 12 of the blade and can be swung to protect the cutting edge of the blade. Arranged to slide on the widened back 13 of the blade is a clip 14 which is U- shaped in cross-section and has converging sides so that the clip can not be taken from the blade transversely, but must be slid on from the end. The clip is provided on its opposite sides, preferably at two separated points, with the screws 15, each screw being preferably provided with its inner end 16 slightly enlarged or headed so that the screw can not be entirely withdrawn'from the clip I and lost, each screw having its head adapted to provide for its manual manipulation, the form of head being immaterial, either formlng a finger-piece or being made, as shown in the figures, for use with a screw-driver or with the nail of a finger. The guard 17 is adapted to be secured against one of the converging sides of the clip and is provided with a series of recesses 18 on the edge adj acent to the cutting edge of the blade whereby teeth 19 are formed which bear on the skin of the user and prevent the cutting, as will be understood, the blade being used next to the skin, and the guard being slightly in ad Vance of the blade to prevent the skin folding up or riding up sufliciently to be cut.
The guard is provided with slots through which the screws 15 pass and against which they are adapted to be clamped to secure the guard in its adjusted positions. The slots are preferably arranged transversely on the guard and can be made either as in Fig. 1 where the slot 20 for each screw is a continuation of one of the recesses between two of the series of teeth, or they can be made as the slot 21 in Fig. 4:, extending in from the back edge of the guard. One or two guards can be used to make the razor adapted for either right or left hand shaving, the one not in use being adapted to be slid down as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2, or one guard can be used which can be removed from one side of the clip and put on the other. The screws 15 are in screw-threaded engagement with the clip and act to fasten it tightly against the razor blade, vand when the guard is in place the same screw also acts to clamp the guard between the head of the screw and the clip.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. The combination of a razor blade having a widened back, with a U-shaped clip having converging sides, screws in both the converging sides and adapted to bear on the blade, and a guard having a series of slots on one edge to form teeth which are adapted to lie adjacent to the cutting edge of the blade, some of the recesses being extended into the guard to receive the screws on each side of the clip and provide means for adjustably securing the guard to the clip on either side thereof.
2. The combination of a razor blade having a widened back, with a U-shaped clip having converging sides, screws in both the converging sides adapted to bear on the In testimony, that I claim the foregoingfl sides of the blade, to transversely adjust the have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of 10 clip on the blade, hand a guard1 having re- April 1910. Y
cesses t0 fit. over t e screws anc to provice means for attaching and adjusting the MICHAEL MONETTI' guard on either side of the clip so that its WVitnesses:
edge can guard the edge of the blade to WM. H. CAMFIELD,
form either a right or left hand safety razor. E. A. PELL.
