TRAIN-ORDER-DELIVERING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed March 15, 1910. Serial No. 549,435.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. SEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meadville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Train-Order-Delivering Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for delivering train orders or messages to engineers or conductors of moving trains, the object being to provide a device of this character embodying a novel form of handle on which is mounted a retainer for the message or train order, the said handle being also formed to provide a ring member which may be positioned where it may be con veniently grasped by the hand of the engineer.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of my improved train order delivering device. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the ring member. Fig. 3 is a detail section taken through a portion of the handle and through a portion of the ring member.
My improved train order delivering device consists of a member which is formed preferably from a single length of wire 1 bent substantially in ring form and covered by a suitable padding 2. The terminals of the wire 1 are twisted together to form a shank 3 which is inserted in the bore 4 of a handle 5. This handle is provided with a wire message retaining member 6 which is preferably formed from a single length of wire bent upon itself to form a gripping jaw 7 which is yieldingly engaged against the handle, as shown. The terminal ends of the wire forming said jaw are embedded in the handle, as illustrated. A keeper 8 of ring form or looped wire or other holding device is pivoted to the handle and its oifice is to engage the free end or terminal of the gripping jaw so as to hold it against the handle and to hold the message or train order operatively confined between a portion of the handle and the said wire jaw. The device as described is extremely simple, it may be manufactured at a relatively low cost and may be used in a convenient manner for delivering train orders or messages obviating the necessity of stopping the train to receive such orders.
In operation, the handle portion of the device is held in the hand of the one delivering the message so that the ring portion is positioned for convenient reach of the engineer W110 may collect the device by grasping it by such ring portion.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a handle, a padded member of ring form at one end of the handle, a wire jaw extending longitudinally of the handle, and a pivoted keeper operable to engage the said jaw to hold it closed against the handle.
