Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. '7, 1906.
Application filed March 28, 1906. Serial No. 308,488.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK J. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Choconut, Susquehanna county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Coupling Devices, of Which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in means for closing breaks in wire fences.
In devising the present invention I have aimed to produce a simple and efficient device by which the, broken strands may be (glickly connected and drawn together with t e desired tension without the use of any devices other than those which form the permanent joint.
With these and other objects in view the invention includes the novel features of construction hereinafter described, and particularly set forthin the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, ih which the figure represents a plan view showing two wires connected by my improved device.
In the drawing the numerals 1 and 2 designate the two portions of a wire which it is desired to connect.
The improved coupling device comprises two members 3 and 4, preferably of wire of suitable stiflness, which are provided with helically formed or twisted portions 3 and 4* designed to screw to ether or into each other, as shown. One of t ese members-3, for example-is provided with an attaching clamp or jaw 5, adapted for engagement with one portion or end of the wire to be connected. The connection between the jaw 5 and wire 3 is a swivel connection to permit rotation, and the member 3 is provided with an offset portion 6, adapted to serve as a handle by which the member 3 may be twisted. The other member 4 is also provided at its outer end with wire-enga ing means for engaging the other portion 0 the wire to be joined; but as the member 4 must be held stationary while the member 3 is rotated to screw the members together this connection need not be a swivel connection. A convenient form of connection is made by doubling the wire back upon itself, as shown at 7, to engage or hook into a loop in the wire 1, the outwardlyextending end serving as a grasping portion to prevent rotation of the member.
From the foregoing description it is thought the operation of the device will be obvious; but it may be briefly restated as follows: One member is connected to the end of one portion of the wires to be connected and the other member to the end of the other portion. One member is then held stationary in one hand and the other member screwed into it until the proper tension is placed upon the wires, when it will be seen that they will be firmly connected together. It will be also seen that a connection is provided which may be ti htened at any time or disconnected readily s ould it be desired to separate the portions of the wire for any purpose.
Having thusv described my invention, what I claim is 1. A wire-coupling device comprising two helical members, having means for attachment to the wires to be connected and adapted to screw the one into the other, substantially as described.
2. A wire-coupling device comprising a pair of helical members, and means carried by each of said members for attachment to the wires to be connected, the means carried by one member including a swivel-joint, substantially as described.
3. A wire-coupling device comprising a pair of helical members, and means carried y each of said members for attachment to the Wires to be connected, the means carried by one member including a swivel-joint, said members having grasping portions whereby one may be rotated with respect to the other,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. BRADY.
