LEWIS H. PFLEGHARDT, OF FAYEITE CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwis H. PFLEGHARDT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fayette City, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to brushes used for scrubbing purposes, and the primary object of my invention is to provide the handle or top of a brush with an adjustable scraper that can be advantageously used for removing dirt and other matter that adheres to a surface and can not be ordinarily removed by the brush proper.
Another object of my invention is to provide a brush with a scraper that can be adjusted whereby it can be conveniently used, or adjusted in position in proximity to the brush sol as not to interfere with the scrubbing operation.
A further object of this invention is to provide a brush with an attachment that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and eicient for cleansing purposes.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by a mechanical construction to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, where- 1n:--
Figure 1 is a plan of the brush, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the brush, and Fig. 11 is a section on line Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral l denotes an oblong brush body provided with a yieldable and flexible scouring element 2, preferably made of groups of bristles mounted in the under side of the body 1, the scouring element being of the ordinary and well known type generally used in connection with scrub brushes.
r1`he top of the body 1 at one end thereof is provided with a longitudinal groove 3 extending` from a point approximately central of the body 1 to the end thereof. Mounted over this groove is an oblong plate 4 having the rear end thereof connected to the body 1 by a screw or other fastening means, while the forward end of said plate is bent downwardly, as at 6 to engage the for- Specication of Letters Patent.

ward end of the body 1. The plate 4f upon one side thereof adacent to the forward end is provided with an apertured lug T and this lug is eomiectcd to the body 1 by a screw 8 or other fastening means. The plate 4e is further provided with a longitudinal slot 9 and the forward end thereof is bifurcated as at 10.
Slidably mounted in the groove 3 of the body 1 is a scraper rod 11 having the for ward end thereof provided with a transverse scraper head 12 and the rear end thereof flattened and apertured, as at 13. Rotatably mounted in the apertured flattened end 13 of the rod 11 is an eye 14E extending upwardly through the slot 9 of the plate el. `When said eye is positioned at right angles to the plate 4, the rod 11 is retained in its adjusted position and when said eye is turned a quarter of a revolution to aline with the slot 9, the rod 11 can be easily adjusted within the groove. The bifurcated end 10 of the plate 4s provides clearance for the rod 11 when shifted in the groove 3, also preventing the scraper head 12 from contacting with the body of the brush 1.
lith the scraper in an extended position and the brush body serving functionally as a handle, the scraper head 12 can be used for removing dirt and other matter' that adheres to a surface or is located in a crack or crevice, and after the scraper has been used it is an extremely simple operation to shift the scraper to a closed position, whereby the brush can be used just as though the scraper was a separate part of the brush.
IVhile in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. The combination with a brush body having a longitudinally-extending groove formed in the outer face thereof, of a plate fixed at one end to the brush body and having its other end bent at right angles and abuttiiig against one end of the brush body, said plate mounted over said groove and provided with a longitudinally-extending slot registering with the groove, said rightangularly disposed portion of said plate being bifurcated, means extending through the plate in proximity to said right-angnlarly disposed portion and engaging in the brush head for securing the bent end of the plate to the brush body, a rod slidably mounted in said groove and projecting from the angular end of the plate, a scraper head Carried by the outer end of said rod, and means carried by the inner end of said rod and extending through said plate and adapted to hold said rod in an adjusted position.
2. The combination With a brush body having a longitudinally-extending groove formed in the outer face thereof, of a plate fixed at one end to the brush body and having its outer end bent at right angles and abutting against one end of the brush body, said right angularly-disposed portion of said plate provided With an opening, said plate mounted over said groove and provided With a longitudinally-extending slot spaced from the opening in said right angularly-disposed portion, means for securing the plate to the brush body, a rod slidably mounted in Said groove and projecting from the angular end of the plate, a scraper head carried by the outer end of said rod, and means carried by said rod and extending through said plate for maintaining said rod in an adjustec position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
