OLIN LA DOW, OF ARCOLA ILLINOIS.
INVALIDS BED-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
Application filed February 15, 1910. Serial No. 543,944.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIN LA Dow, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Arcola, in the county of Douglas and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids Bed- Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to head or body rests especially adapted for use by invalids, and the principal object of the same is to provide a device of the character stated the head or body supporting member of which may be adjusted to various angles relative to its base member to suit the convenience of the user.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the principal objects of the same are susceptible of changes in detail and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved rest. Fig. 2 is a side View thereof, shown partly in section. Fig. 3 is a rear vlew.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be observed that the improved head rest comprises a base formed of duplicate side members l2 which are retained in spaced parallel relation by the connecting bars 3%. The said base members are preferably flat-sided so that they will rest firmly on a bed or the like. At their intermediate portion each base member is provided with a vertical opening 5, the ends of which are preferably rounded and whose upper edge preferably flares outwardly. A pivot bolt 6 connects the two base members 12, said bolt passing transversely through the opening 5 of each member. A hinge strap 7 projects from the slot 5 of each base member 12, the lower end of said hinge strap 7 being mounted on pivot rod 6 and the projecting upper portion of said straps being provided with a longitudinal row of regularly spaced apart transverse openings 8. The base members form a stationary part of the improved rest, and at their forward end, have a hinged connection 9 with similar but movable members 1011 which supports the cushioning material '12 which may be of canvas or other soft material. Members 1011 are retained in spaced parallel relation by the bars 13 14 and are each equipped with a slot 15 that is similar in all respects to the slots 5 of the base members 1-2. A pivot bolt 16 connects the movable members 1011, said bolt passing transversely through the slots 15 and having projecting therefrom the hinge strap 17 provided with a longitudinal row of regularly spaced openings 18 complemental to the openings 8 of the hinge strap 7. Bolts 6 and 16 are each provided with end nuts 19 and washers 20 so that the same may be firmly clamped to the members of the improved rest.
As will be obvious the longitudinal row of openings formed through the hinge strap 7 and 17 are for the purpose of permitting relative adjustment of the movable section of the rest relative to the base, the straps after being adjusted to the desired position being locked by means of the fastening bolt 21 whose ends are passed through the alined openings of said strap and by means of the end nuts 22 said straps are clamped together so that the head rest will be firmly held in the desired position. Obviously the sections of the rest may be folded together by releasing the end nuts 22 and removing the bolt 21.
What I claim as my invention A rest comprising a base formed of spaced apart parallel base members, each member provided with a vertical slot, a pivot bolt connecting said members and passing transversely through said slots, a hinge strap for each base member having one end within the slot therein and mounted on the pivot bolt, said straps being provided with regularly spaced openings, a movable section comprising parallel members having one end hinged to one end of said base members, said members of the movable section being each provided with a transverse opening, a pivot bolt connecting the members of the movable section and passing through the openings In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
OLIN LA DOWV.
