Description

nted ttre patent @Win12,
Lette/rs Patent No. 96,585, dated November` 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-coUPLrNG.
vw-v* The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part oi the same.
To all whom 'it may concern y Be it known that I, J. M. HALE, of Georgia Plains, in the county of Franklin, and in the State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling for Water-Pipes; and do hereby declare that the following lis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and'to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention. consists in the construction and arrangement of a coupling for wooden water-pipes, which convey water under ground, for the purpose of rendering said pipes durable and lasting.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertaius, to make and use the same, I' will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,l referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in whichf Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and
Figure 2, a side elevation.
1t is well known that wooden pipes, under ground, will last along time, if always iilled with water, but if only partly filled, they will decay rapidly.
The object of my invention is to connect the logs or pipes together in such a way that this result is perfectly accomplished. To this end,
It consists of a metallic tube, A, of suitablelength, to be driven on to or into the ends of the wooden pipes, so as to be perfectly water-tight.
The coupling A is provided with a vertical tubular projection, B, having a division-plate, C, in the centre, which also divides the main coupling A, transversely.-
There is-space for the water to pass over`- the upper end of the centre plate C in the upper end ofthe tubular projection. r
IThe water has to fill the pipe before it llows over the centre plate, no mattei' how small the stream running through the pipe. The pipes once filled, would always remain so, and a leak `in any section of the the pipes would only aect that section.
Wooden pipes, thus coupled together, would be more durable than lead or tile water-pipes, and far cheaper.
Having thus fully described xnyinvention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The coupling A, provided with a tubular projection, B, and division-plate C, or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have here unto set my hand, this 24th day of December, 18.68.
J. M. HALE.
