Description

1 tlnitnl GEORGE' OOWDT G, OF SENEOA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR'TO HIMSELF, JOHN P.
COWIN G, PHILO COVVING, AND MARSHALL OOWING,
Letters Patent No. 87,912, dated 1/[arch 16, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the Brama- *'-0-400 To all whom it may conce/rn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE GOWING, of Seneca Falls, county of Seneca, and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Pumps; and I do declare that the following is a full and exact description' thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching gas or other pipe to pump-standards. 4
My mode is to provide a nut with a thread cut in the same, and placed on the core-arbor, and cast in the standard of the pump, just below the spout.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will tion and operation.
A is the pump-standard.
B is the induction-pipe.
C is a sectional view ofthe nut, with the inductionpipe B screwed into the same.
D is a perspective view of the nut O.
F, end View of the same.
E shows a depression in the side of nut, to make it hold more firmly when cast in the pump. Y
proceed to describe its. construc- The usual mode of manufacture is to attach the pipe to the base, Gr, but the objection to this mode is the amount of water necessary to fill the standard before it leaves the spout, andis also liable 'to freeze, in cold weather, beforeit can run out at the vent.
Another mode kis to cast the standard in two or more pieces, and screw or flange them together at the dotted line H. The objection tothis mode is its cost, and liability to leak and get out of repair.
These modes I disclaim. 4
I Ado not confine myself to the particular shape of theoutside of nut C. Itmay be of any suitable shape,l
when cast in standard, to hold. vIt may also be made of eitherwrought or cast-iron, or composition.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pump-standard, having cast in it a nut, or thimble, C, to attach the induction-pipe to, as above described and set forth.
GEORGE OOWING. Witnesses:
OYRUs J. THOMAS, Punto OoWlNG.
