Description

initrd gitarre M. o. HAWKINS, or EDINBOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA.'
Letters Patent No. 93,990, dated August 24, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, M. C. HAWKINS, of Edinborough, inthe county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and -useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art tofmake and use the same, reference being had to the accompaf nying drawing, forming part 'of this specification.
lhis invention relates to anew and useful improvement in pumps, designed for a combined forcing and liing-pump; and consists in the employment of a glass, stone, or earthen pump-barrel,` with wood tubing,- valve-chamber, and platform, all onstructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter described, whereby the several parts of the apparatus are made detachable, for the purpose of rendering the same portable.
The drawing represents a vertical sectionof a pump, constructed according to my invention.
A is the platform;
B is the pump-stand;Y
C represents the valve-chamber;
D is the tubing; and
Eis the barrel, which is made of "stone, glass, or earthen-ware, and is securely attached to the valvechamber or valve-section G of thepump, by means of tlanges and bolts.
F is the piston, which works in the barrel E.
G is the pump-rod.
h h represent the valves. The lower valve closes on the top of the tube D on a seat. The upper valve has its seat ou a'partition, t, in the valve-chamber, which partition is made for that purpose in boring the chamber. l
Thes use of the material named, inthe constructionA of the pump-barrel, renders it comparatively indestructible, besides being far less liable to become or remainA coated with the impurities contained in the water than those ordinarily employed` Its manner of attachment tothe valve-chamber also obviates the common, objection, previously made to stone barrels, since it cannot be broken or dsarranged by any ordinary means or usage.
My invention, as a whole, forms a portable apparatus superior to any now-in use, being composed of consisting of the platform A, pump-stand B, valvesection C, and.v tubing D, with valve h h, the stone barrel E, piston F, rod G, and brake-lever H, all com strueted and arranged as herein shown Aand described.
M. .0. HAWKINS.
