Description

tenti ALONZO PALMER, Or HUDSON, MIOHiGAN, AssiGNOR TO HIMSELF AND N.H. MELCHER.
l Leners Patent Ne. 84,754, dated Deeembee e, 186s.
:maeva-Memm PUMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same) To all lwhom it may conce/m:
Y Be it known that I, ALONZO PALMER, ofHudson, in the county of Lenawee, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification,
A represents a pump, tube, or stock, of any convenient size, and closed at its lower end.
C represents a cylinder, which is open at both ends, and is made of wood, metal, lglass, or other suitable material, and is connected centrally with the stock A, by ineans of a channel or tube, B.
E E represent two Valve-plates, made of metal,'and secured within the cylinder C, at equal distances on each side of its centre pipe or channel B.
The cylinder is made a little smaller at these points,
,so as to give' opportunity for more securely fastening 'the plates E.
The two plates E E are connected bya tubular bolt', H, which runs from the centre of the one to the centre of the other.
Through this tubular bolt passes a rod, I.
J K and J K represent metallic disks, which are secured upon the rod H, on each side of the plates E E, being rigidly attached to said rod.
The disks K K are perforated, so that water will pass through them freely, while the disks J J are solid, and act as valves.
G G represent wooden or other suitable rings, which are placed between the disks J and K, and J' K', having packing upon their peripberies, to make them t snugly within the cylinder. These rings are .less in thickness than the distance between the disks J and K, and serve as seats for the solid valves or disks j j. As the rod I moves upward, the disk K is brought in contact with the ring G, while a space is left between the ring and disk for Water to enter.
i' As the rod descends, the disk J is brought in contact with the ring, thus closing this opening and forcing the water below it through plate E, and into pump-stock.
A'disk, of leather, is secured to each of the inner faces of the plates E, and act as valves, to allow water to enter the chamber O.
The cylinder O is immersed, so that it receives water 'from each c nd.
r By working the rod I backward and forwardin the cylinder, water is thus alternately received through valves, arranged and nsed'as and for the purposes set forth. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 10th day of September, 1867.
