Letters Patent N 96,947, dated November 16, 1869.
.NOWLAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JAMES COLE- MAN AND WILLIAM BAXTEB, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
To all whom Haney concern:
Be it-known that LSAMUEL B. BJNOWLAN, of
.the city, county, and State of New York, have into make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This, invention relates to new and important improvements in force-pumps for raising and forcing water; and
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of certain mechanical appliances and devices, applicable to either double or sin glc-actin g pumps, for supplying feed-water to steam-boilers and ,fire-engines, and for various other purposes, as will be hereinnftermore fully described.
The accompanyingplate of drawings represents a central vertical section of a pump constructed according to my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B represent a double cylinder, the parts being separatedby the partition 0.
D is the piston-rod, which works through a suitable stuffing-box in the end of the cylinder.
E E represent valve-pistons on the red, one working in cylinder A,thc other in cylinder B, as seen in the drawing.
F is the supply-pipe, which communicates with the water in the well or reservoir.
G and H represent the siphon-pipes, which connect the cylinder A B with the compressing-chamber I.
The latter is formed by and between the shell or cylinder It and the cone-shaped (inverted) reccpta-' cle S.
The vessel S is designed to be constantly full of wa: ter, so as to prevent the air from entering the pipe N. It is support-ed on the shell R by a perforated flange, and through the perforations therein the water flows on its passage through the pump.
1 denotes the chamber in the vessel S.
J is an oscillating gate-valve, which alternately opens and closes the siphon-pipes G H, as the pistons play back and forth in the cylinders.
K K represent flap-valves,-which alternately open upward, to admit the flow of water into the cylinder,
L is the discharge-pipe.
The pipe is attached, by the coupling-nut M, to the top of the compressing-chamber pipe N.
In using the pump as a gardener hand fire-engine, (for which purpose it is admirably adaptcrh) a hose may be attached, instead of a rigid pipe.
The course of the water from the supply-pipe F is indicated by the arrows.
In this example of my invention, the pump is worked by means of the lever O, the fulcrum of which is on the bed-plate P, at q but I do not confine myself to any particular method of driving the pump.
The operation of the pump will be readily understood froin the drawing.
By this arrangement, a constant flow of water is secured, while, by the arrangement of the valves, the falling or loss of water in the pumps is prevented.
The advantages of this arrangement for the uses to which force-pumps are applied are many, and must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invent-ion,
I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of pipe N and chambers I I, as and for the purpose specified.
.2. The arrangement of the siphon-pipes G and H, and the oscillating valve-gate J, in combination with a double-acting force-pump, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the double cylinder A B, pistons E E,'siphon-pipes Gr H, valve J, chamber I, and pipe N, with the valves K K, when the same are arranged to operate substantially as and for the pur' poses described.
SAML. B. B. NOWLAN.
