TO ALL WHOM ITvMAY CONCERN:
Befit known that I, .I ULIUS WILGKE, of-Newarlr, in the county of Essex,'and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being'had to the accompanying drawing, forming-part of this specication, and in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional view of apump constructed according .to my improvement,

Now, itjvill'be obvious that the reciprocating action of the-pungp-piston willrserveto throw alternately to opposite ends''of the cylinder C, the valve F, by the water lpreviously sucked intothe pump-barrel being -forced by said piston through either one of the'passages an', and caused to act' uponone side of the diaphragme, and

To prevent loss by leakage, and secure atight yet free iii; to the self-acting reciprocatingvalve'll?, without objectionable or expensive packing, I construct the tubular valve F with a numberof slits or splits, running rore v or less ina longitudinal direction for any suitable distance or distances from the ends of the valve, so that the pressa ure ofthe Huid within the valve will act upon its'split sides to expand orbea-r it againstits cylinder. -In this way' may a tight buteasy t be secured, and in a cheap and 'simple manner, the close character of tlxe valve-cylinder and freedom from outside connections of the valve adding to'its cheapness, simplicity, and exemption from leakageyvihile'tle whole arrangement constitutes; a most eilicient double-acting pump.
