IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,655, dated November '7, 1871.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN MARQUIS, of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double- Acting Force- Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my improvements consists in providing passages at both sides of the barrel or cylinder which terminate and lead into valvechambers at the top and bottom.
These chambers are constructed transversely with the stroke of the piston, the upper one being cast with the barrel and elevated above the plane of the lower end of the pump, while the lower valve-chamber is adjustable and may be detached. Both valve-chambers are provided with doors which are removable. The inner faces of the cover are provided with lugs or ears through which the valve-stem passes. The pumpbarrel, the upper valve-chamber, and the passages are cast in one piece. The lower valvechamber is cast separate, and when attached to the pump forms at once the lower valve-chamber and the lower cylinder-head. To the lower end of the cylinder is attached a crescent-shaped iiange, and the partition of thelower valvechamber is providedwith a iiange similar in construction, so as to form a section valve-chamber, one for the up and one for the down stroke, the object being to provide a pump with as straight passages as possible and lessen the friction of the water in its passage through the pump, and at the same time `the construction and arrangement of the mechanism is such that it may be easily reached for repairs and adjusted in case of derangement of the parts.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a section with top of the case removed. Fig. 2 is a side section, showing the doors of the valve-chambers with guides and the valves with their spindles. Fig. 3 is a plan of the lower valvechamber. Fig. 4:-represents the lower end of the pump with lower valve-chamber removed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
A is the upper valve-chamber, with ports B B opening from the side of the water-passages B B', which extend to the lower valve-chambers C C. These are also provided with ports C C', which open into the suction-pipe D. Below the upper valve-seat in the projecting ont of the pump is placed a partition, E, which divides the water-passages at the right and left of the cylinder. The lower end of the cylinder is provided with a flange, L, and a corresponding flange, M, of greater width, is formed with the partition H. which divides the lower valve-chambers. To the lower face of the doors I I are cast guides J J, provided with holes of a sufficient size for passage and allow the easy working of the spindles of the valve K K. The entire lower valvechamber and induction-pipe are removable and the doors are held by screw-bolts I2 I2 by means of lugs I3 I3, which render them air and watertight.
I am aware that there are other force-pumps having a valve-chamber at the top and at the bottom; but the adjustment and construction of the passages are diiferent from mine, and these pumps are not provided with the doors whereby the valves can be easily reached and repaired without disturbing the discharge or the suctionpipe. There are also other pumps having doors, whereby its valve can be reached without removing the suction or discharge-pipe, but are placed together near the top of the pump, or in the center half-way between the ends of the bar-V rel or cylinder, thereby twisting and crooking the passages and causing great friction, so as to impede the current of water, and also making it necessary to close the lower end of the cylinder with a separate casting or cylinder-head; all of which renders thecost of construction much more than that of my device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The arrangement of the passages B B, when placed with reference to the pump, bolted on the plank to the right and left of the cylinder, and divided below the valve-seats by the partition E, as described.
