WILLIAM'S.` CARR, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Leners Patent N 98,740, daten January 11, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. CARR, oi the city end St-ate of New York, have invented and made a 4 new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I -do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specitication, wherein- Figure 1 is a section, with part of the cylinder and -the valve-box in elevation, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section, transversely, of the valve and box, at the line x Similar parts are marked with the same letters of reference. y
This invention is intended especially for use in houses where the water has to be pumped up from a well or cistern, or elevated higher than the supply, the pump being constructed with special reference to simplicity and easy access to the valves and packing's.
My invention] consists in an arrangement of valveseats, valves, and valve-boxes, at one end of the pump, so that the induction and educt'ion-valves come over each other .and communicate with water-ways, so as to make a double-acting pump, and I pack the pistonrod with double-cup leather washers facing each other, with a ring between them, so as toprevent water eserwin or airl assinv into thel um 3.
In the drawinga represents the barrel ofthe pump, supported upon a suitable stand, b, and
'c is a water-way leading from the rear along the side of the pump-barrel to near the head d, and opening into the pump at that point.
The rear end of the cylinder a is made with a box,
c, that forms, at its upper surface, the seats for the eduction-valves t', the same being formed from the leather that sits between thel box c and cap j, and this cap fis iitted, at its upper end,witl1 the coupling g, for the delivery-pipe.
rlhe box h is formed with seats lupon its upper snrftce for the valves r. formed in the leather that sits between the boxes h and e, and these parts arc'sethe screw-bolts lo passing through ears on f and h.
The box h is provided with the coupling I, for the induction-pipe, and it will now be seen that these valves sit upon seats that are horizontal, or nearly so, and
each valve is of the ordinary character, with a leather face and weighted back.
The valves are easily cleaned or repaired by simply separating the 'parts by removing the bolts 7c, and the valves are all close together, so as to be simultaneously put in order.
The division n separates the induction-ways to the front and back end of the pump as they extend into the box e. f
The piston of the pump is made with cup-leathers, sitting back to back, or in any other suitable manner.
The pistonfrod m is made with a jaw, o, at the end, with a roller in a mortise, p, in the stock q.
p is the fulcrum, upon which the stock q is moved, by a lever, t, inserted ina socket at the upper end of the stock q.
The stuIiing-box for the rod 'in is made with cupleathers 2 and 3, set facing leach other, and within the movable ring 4,
The anges of the cup-leathers coming at the endsprevented, and the said cup-leathers are protected from injury by standing toward each other within the. ring 4, and, acting in opposite directions, will prevent water coming out or air going into the pump.
A slight packing of elastic material, such as cottonwaste, might be inserted within the ring 4, and this packing is very tight, and, at the same time, there is but little friction.
\Vhat I claim, and Idesire to secure by Letters Patent, is p,
l. The double cup-leathers 2 and 3, facing each other, and kept apart by the ring 4, and clamped by tlIc'screw-cap n, and forming a packing for the pistonrod nt, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The aforesaid double cup-leather packing for the piston-rod, in combination with the double cup-leather piston, cylinder a, and valves' forming the pump, as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 31st day of July, A. D. 1,869.
IVM. S. GARR.
Witnesses f Guo. D. WALKER, Guo. T. PINGKNEY.
