Be it known that I, ALMON D. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Wakeeld, in the county of Carroll and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in folding brackets of that class designed to support shelves or the like in stores or which may be employed with equal e'fliciency for 4 supporting scaii'olds upon buildings, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily and readily folded into a compact package so that the same may be readily transported.

llVith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the linvention resides in the novel construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred em bodiment of the invention, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing` the same in its open or supporting position. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical sectional view of the device when folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view upon the line 3 3 Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the connection of the brace member and the supporting members when in their open position. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion ot' the leg member. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the leg member illustrating the slot and pocket thereof.

In the accompanying drawings the nu* meral 1 designates the improved folding bracket. This bracket 1 comprises essentially a support member 2, a leg member 3 and a brace member 4. The support member is either' integrally provided with or has Connected thereto 4in any suitable or preferred manner an extending hook member 5. This hook 5 is adapted to be inserted within a suitable opening provided within a wall when the device is to support shelves or which may be of a suitable length to extend across a wall when the device is to support a scaffold. The support member 2 is substantially U-shaped in cross section and has its side arms provided with alining longitudinally extending cut-away portions or channels 6, the outer end of which is depressed to provide a suitable pocket designated by the numeral 7, and within which the pintle 8 of the brace member 4 is adapted to rest when the device is in its set up position. The brace member 4 also comprises a substantially U-shaped member which is of a suitable width as to be folded readily `between the sides of the support member 2 and the said U-shaped member has its connecting portion opposite that of the headed pintle 8 cut-away a suitable distance so as to provide for the reception of the leg. 3. The leg member is pivot-ally connected as at 9 with the support member 2 and the leg member 3 has its lower portion provided with a longitudinally extending slot, designated by the numeral 10, the upper walls of which are offset to form a suitable pocket 11, the said pocket being adapted `for the reception of a headed pintle 12 carried by the lower portions of the side arms of the brace member 4( By this arrangement it will be noted that when it is desired to collapse the bracket, it is merely necessary to swing the support member 2 upward upon its pivot 9 so as to allow the pintle 12 to be withdrawn from the pocket 11 and to position the said pintle within the passage or cut-away portion 10. The pintle 8 is also removed from its pocket 7 and both the pintles 8 and 12 slide in their respective rooves 6 and 10 to the opposite end thereoi when the leg member 3 is positioned between the sides of the brace member 4, and the said brace is rotated upon the pivot 9 so as to position the brace member and leg member between the walls of the support member 2, thus compactly folding the device and providing a comparatively small and easily transportable package.

In the device illustrated in the tigures of the drawing, the hook member 5 is provided with a longitudinally extending body portion 13, which normally contacts the connecting wall of the U-shaped support 2, and the said hook member is also provided with ears 14 having suitable openings adapted to be engaged by the pintle 9. By this arrangement, the hook is given a certain amount of movement whereby it may be readily and easily positioned within the opening adapted for its reception.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a simple, comparatively cheap and thoroughly effective foldable bracket, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now apv cing any of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A folding bracket comprising a cross sectionally U -shaped support member, a hook member connected with the support member, a leg member pivotallyconnected with the support, and a cross sectionally U- shaped brace member slidably connected with both the support member and the leg member.

2. In a folding bracket, a support member,

. a hook member pivotally connected with the support member, said support member being provided with a longitudinally extending slot terminating in a pocket at one of its ends, a leg member pivotally connected with the support member, said leg member being also provided with a longitudinally extending slot terminating in a pocket, and a brace member provided with headed pintles engaging the slots of the support member and of the leg member and adapted tobe seated within the pockets of both the members when the device is in its set up position.

In a folding bracket, a substantially cross sectional U-shaped support member, a hook connected with the support member, the sides of the support member being provided with longitudinally extending slots terminating in o'set pockets, a brace member positioned between the sides of the support member and being provided with projecting pintles adapted to play within the slots provided by the sides of the support member, said brace member having its oonnecting portion cut away adjacent one of.

its ends, a leg member pivotally connected to the support member and positioned between the sides of the brace member adjacent its cut-away connectingportion, said leg member being provided with a longitudinally extending' slot terminating in an offset pocket, and a pintle provided by the brace member adapted to play within the cut-away portion of the leg, and whereby the leg member may be folded within the brace member and the brace member may be folded within the support member as the pintles of the brace member travel within the slots of the support and of the leg members.
