Specification forniin g part of Letters Patent N o. 176,512, dated April 25, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: Beit known that I, RIGHARD ST. L. B. OHINNERY, of Kankakee, in'the county of Kankakeeand State of Illinois, haveJ invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging.y Shelf, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved shelf. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line w m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail edge view of one of the end parts of the Shelf. u

Thebbject of this invention is to furnish an improved hanging or bracket Shelf, which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and which shall he so constructed that it may be lengthened and shortenhed to ddjust it to the breadth of the place where it is to be hung. i
The invention consists in an improved han gin gs-helf, formed of the two brackets'and the extension shelf, constructed and arranged as hereinafter fully described.
The brackets, two of which are used, consist of three pieces, A B G. -The upright piece A has a socket, al, formed upon its lower end to receive the turned-down end par-t bf of the base or horizontal piece B. The outer end of the base-piece B is uotched to receive the lower end of the brace O, the upper end of which is inserted in the slot a formed in the upper part of the upright piece A. The brace U has a cross-head, o', formed upon each end for the outer sides of the pieces A B to rest upon, as shown in Fig. 1. In the upper ends of the uprght pieces A are formed holes a3 to receive the nails upon which the brackets are to be hung. D is the shelf,-Which is made in -three pieces, the middle'one of which has its side edges made thicker and grooved toreceive the side edges of the end pieces, so that the three pieces may be'pushed together or drawn apart to make the shelf longer or shorter according to the breadth of the place where the Shelf is to be hung. The end pieces of the shelf have their middle parts raised so as to be liush with the thickened edges of the middle piece, as shown in Figs. l and 2. Upon the lower sides of the outer ends of the end pieces of the shelf D are formed lngs d' to rest against the side edges of the base-'pieces B and keep the shelves from slipping olf the brackets.
With this construction the shelf can be taken down and paeked in small compass for storage or transportation.
Having thus described my invention, Lclaim as new and desire to secure by- Letters Patent- An improved hanging-shelf, consisting of the brackets A B O and the extension-Shelf D, constructed and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
RICHARD ST. LEGER BRODRICK CHINNERY.
