To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMoN D. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Wakefield, in the county of Carroll and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in folding brackets which are designed as a temporary support for shelves, scaffolds or the like and the primary object of the invention is to construct a bracket of this character which may be easily and quickly positioned upon a suitable support and which has its parts so arranged as to effectively sustain a shelf or bracket, and which at the same time may be easily and quickly disconnected from its support and folded into a compact package, so that the same may be readily transported.
Another object of the invention is to simplify and improve the folding bracket upon which I received United States Patent No. 965,816, granted to me on July 6, 1910.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing the same in its open or supporting position. Fig. 2 is a partial vertical sectional View of the device when folded. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view upon the line 22 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View illustrating the connection of the brace member and the supporting members, when in their open position; Fig. 5 is an elevation of a portion of the leg member.
meral 1 designates the improved folding bracket. This bracket 1 comprises essent-ially a support member 2, a leg member 3 and a brace member 4. The support member 2 is either integrally provided with or has connected thereto in any suitable or preferred manner, an extending hook 5. The
The support 2 has its lower edges formed with a longitudinally extending cut away portion, the latter adapted to provide the shoulders 8 and 9, the purpose of which will be presently set forth. Straddling the support 2 is a saddle 10. The side arms of the said saddle are formed with alining openings and these openings are adapted for the reception of a pintle 11 whereby the brace 4 is pivotally connected and secured upon the support 2. substantially U-shaped in cross section, but is of a size adapted to fit snugly within the U-shaped support 2 when the members are folded together. The pintle 11 is adapted, when the device is in set-up position, to contact with the shoulders 8, so that the limit of movement of the saddle 10 as well as that of the brace 4 is effectively limited in one direction.
The lower end of the brace 4 has its connecting wall cut away for a suitable distance to provide means whereby the arms of the U-shaped brace may straddle the vertical rib 12 of the leg 3. This rib 12 is provided with a plurality of depressions or cut away portions 13 and slidably mounted upon the substantially T-shaped leg is, what I term a retaining element 14. This member 14is constructed of a single strip of suitable material and is bent to conform to the shape of the T-shaped leg 3. The arms or outwardly extending portions of the said member 13 are each formed with alining L- shaped openings 15, and pivotally connected between the said arms and with the T- shaped openings, as at 16, is the lower extremity of the brace 4.
In setting up the device, the saddle 10 is slid along the support 2 until its pintle 11 contacts with the shoulder 8. The brace 4 is slid upon the T-shaped leg 3 until its pintle is brought into alinement with any of the depressions 13. a longitudinally cut away to provide spaced From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodi ment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be; made if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. A folding bracket comprising a support member, said support member having its lower portion formed with an offset wall, a 1 saddle adapted to straddle the support, said saddle having its arms provided with a pin adapted to contact the offset of the support, a leg member pivotally connected wit-h one i end of the support, a brace member pivotally connected with the saddle and slidably 1 mounted upon the leg, and means for del tachably connecting and securing the brace to the leg.
2. In a folding bracket, a support meinber, a hook connected with the support member, said support having its lower portion,
shoulders, a saddle straddling the supp,or.t, said saddle having its arms provided witha pintle adapted to engage the outer shoulders of the support, a brace member engaged by the pintle of the saddle, a leg member pivotally connected with the support, a hook connected with the pivot of the support and leg members, said hood having oppositely disposed horizontal portions formed with: vertical edges, and means for removably securing and sustaining the free ends of the brace upon the leg member.
3. In a detachable bracket of the class set forth, a support member, said support being U-shaped in cross section and having its lower edges formed with a longitudinally extending depression adapted to provide shoulders, a saddle straddling the support, said saddle having its arms pivotally connected together and the said pivot adapted to abut against its outer shoulder when the bracket is in its set-up position, a cross sectionally T-shaped member pivotally connected with the support, said leg member having its central portion formed with a plurality of spaced depressions, a brace pivotally connected with the saddle of the support, said brace having its opposite end bifurcated to straddle the central portion of the T-shaped leg, a pintle connecting the bifurcated portions and adapted to be engaged with one of the depressions of the leg, and a sustaining element straddling the leg and adapted to retain the pintle in engagement with the depressions of the leg.
4. In a detachable bracket of the class set forth, a cross sectionally U-shaped support,
said support having its lower edges cut away i longitudinally to provide shoulders, a saddle straddling the support and having its lower arms connected and adapted to abut against the outermost shoulder when the device is in its set-up position, a hook upon the support, a cross sectionally T-shaped leg member pivotally connected with the rear of the support and between the sides thereof, the central rib of the leg member being formed with a plurality of spaced depressions, a cross sectionally EU-shaped brace pivotally connected between the arms of the saddle and adapted to engage bet-ween the sides of the support,
the said brace having its free end stra dling the central rib of the leg, a pintle .carried by the brace and adapted to engage within one of the depressions of the leg, a sustaining element, said sustaining element comprising a member cor-responding with the cross sectional form .of the leg and having its oppositely disposed arms provided with L- shaped slots, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
