Combined Step-Ladders, Benches, and-GIothes-Frames. No. 145,716. Patented [366.2351873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGEo HAVILAH H. BABKER, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED STEPLADDERS, BENCHES, AND CLOTHES-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,716, dated December 23, 1873 application filed November 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAVTLAH H. BARKER, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improved Combined Step-Ladder, Bench, and
Clothes-Frame, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a view of the at side of the same folded up. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same expanded into a washform. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same expanded into a double ladder. Fig.,5 is an edge or side lview of the same adjusted as an extension-ladder. Fi g. 6 is a perspective view of the same expanded into a clothes-horse.
The letters a a1 a2 denote a ladder-frame, and the letters b b1 b2 another ladder-frame. To one end of the former are pivoted the two legs c c1, having cross-rounds o2, and to the other end of the same frame are pivoted the legs d 'd'. To one end of the ladder-frame b b1 b2 the legs e el, having cross-rounds e2, are pivoted, and to the other end of the same frame the legs f f are pivoted. The ends oi' the legs c and e are hinged together; also, the ends of the legs e el; also, the ends ofthe legs df, and also the ends of the legs d f. When the two frames and the legs are folded together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the whole thing is in very compact form for stowage or transportation. It can be locked in this position of adjustment by wire pins i t running, through the ears s s fastened to the frame-sides b b1, into the frame-sides a a1.
By sliding the frame b bl b2 endwise upon the frame a a1 a2, as shown in Fig. 3, the legs are thrown downward, so as to transform the device into a convenient bench or wash-form, the height of which is regulated by the distance the two frames are moved endwise upon each other. The frames are locked at the desired point by the pins M running through the ears s s.
By throwing those ends of the two frames on which are the legs d d ff apart till these sets of legs form straight lines, While the other ends converge toward each other, as shown in.
Fig. 4, a double ladder is formed, the length of which can be extended by locking the legs c cl to the frame-sides a a1 by means of pins o o, and similarly locking the legs c c1 to the framesides b b.
By sliding the two frames endwise upon each other as far as they will go, as shown in Fig. 5, an extension-ladder is formed, and the two. frames are locked by the pins 1l e' running through the ears s s.
By pulling the two frames apart till all the sets of legs lie in straight lines, as shown in Fig. 6, a clothes-horse is formed.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the frame a al a2, provided with the pivoted legs c c1 d d', with the frame b b1 b2, having the legs e cl f j" pivoted thereto, the corresponding sets of legs upon the two frames being hinged together, the whole constructed, arranged, and designed for operation and use, substantially as hereinbe fore set forth.
