A. G. PERKINS. LADDER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR G. PERKINS, OF COVENTRY, ENGLAND.
LADDER.
1 SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,759, dated. January 26, 1897.
Application filed April 16, 1896.
. T0 and whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR GEORGE PER- mm, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Coventry, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification thereof.
This invention relates to improvements in or relating to ladders, and the same is carried out as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention in position; Fig. 2, a section through line 00 y in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my invention when used asa step-ladder.
a is the bottom half of my ladder, having its uprights or sides of the grooved or tubular shape shown in Fig. 2.
b is the top half of the ladder, which slides into the grooved or tubular sides of the bottom half a, each part a and b having holes 0 and d, respectively, corresponding with one another, so that set-screws e 6 may be passed through same for the purpose of adjusting the height of the ladder.
When it is desired to employ the ladder as a pair of steps or step-ladder, the part b is withdrawn from the part a, and the ends ff of same, which are pointed, as shown, are
Serial No. 587,883. (No model.)
passed through the holes 9 g in the top of part a, the hinged clips h h engaging with the pointed ends, as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of retaining the parts a and b in their relative position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In convertible or adjustable ladders of the class herein described, a ladder formed in two sections one section having side rails which slide in grooves in the side rails of the other section or part, bolts or pins passing through suitable apertures in said side rails for the purpose of maintaining the sections in any desired position, there being apertures at or about the end of one section, in which the ends or projections upon the other section engage when for use as a step-ladder, a clip for securing same in position all in combination substantially as described and illustrated herein.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of January, 1896.
ARTHUR G. PERKINS.
