BOX-LID FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. HENDRIX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ashland, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box- Lid Fasteners, of which t e following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a box lid fastener, and it has for its object to provide a lid fastener of this description which is of simple construction and involves the use of a movable pronged member slidably fitted in a holder therefor attached to the box and the prong of which may be readily forced into the lid of the box and securely held therein due to the engagement of a part carried by the prong member with the body of the box.
Figure I is a perspective view of a fragment of a box body wall, a fragment of the lid thereon and my fastening member shown in full lines as it appears previous to its being moved into a position over the lid of the box, and in dotted lines to the position to which it is moved prior to securing the lid to the box through the medium of the fastener. Fig. II is a similar view to Fig. I, with the fastener in position for service in holding the lid to the box body. Fig. III is a section taken on line IIIIII, Fig. II. Fig, IV is a cross section taken on line IVIV, Fig. II.
In the accompanying drawings :-A designates a wall of the box body and B a lid resting on said wall.
1 designates a strap or support for the movable member of my box fastener and which is secured to the wall of the box adjacent to its upper edge, and is provided with an outwardly projecting guide member 2 having a guideway therein that is inclined downwardly and inwardly from its upper end toward the outer face of the box wall, in order that the movable member to be presently referred to may occupy a position that will be inclined relative to the vertical plane at the outer face of the box wall.
4: is a rod slidably fitted in the guideway member 2 of the support 1 and provided at its upper end with an arm at that extends horizontally, or at a right angle, to the vertical portion of the rod and carries at its end a prong 5 that is arranged parallel with the vertical body of the rod.

At the lower end of the rod 3 is a barb or spur 6 that is adapted to occupy a position at the outer face of the wall of the box body when the prong 5 is in position above the lid of the box, and is forced downwardly into said lid.
In the practical use of my box fastener, the fastening rod is elevated into the position seen in Fig. I, with the prong turned so that it does not overhang the box body wall, as seen in full lines, thereby permitting the ready application of the box lid to the box body. The fastener rod is then turned so that its prong occupies the position seen in dotted lines Fig. I, ready to enter into the box lid, and pressure is applied to the arm 4; of the rod in any desirable manner where by the prong 5 is forced downwardly into the lid to hold it in its position upon the box body. At the time that the rod 3 is in position to provide for its prong entering into the box lid, the barb 6 at the lower end of the rod rests against the outer face of the wall of the box and, as said rod is moved downwardly, the barb rides against the box body wall and moves rearwardly, due to the incline in the guideway member 2 of the support 11, in order that the barb 6 may be so presented to the box body wall as to bite thereinto. The fastener rod is, therefore, held in its lowered position by the engagement of the barb of the side wall, with the result that the rod is prevented from moving upwardly to permit separation of the rod from the box body.
The salient features in my box fastener are the rod 3, having a prong at one end and a support for said rod whereby the lower end of the rod is caused to be directed toward the body of the box to which the fastener is applied when the rod is lowered, with the result of causing an engagement to occur bet-ween the lower end of the rod and the box body at the same time that the prong at the upper end of the rod enters into the box lid. This engagement between the lower end of the rod and the box body is preferably acquired by the barb 6, but it is obvious that modifications of my improvement may be readily made whereby the lower end of the rod extending to the box body may be caused to be placed in engagement therewith, and I therefore claim broadly any structures involving the features mentioned, aside from the feature of the barb, and due to which the rod is caused to be held in a lowered position in consequence of the engagement of its lower portion with the box body after the prong of the fastener rod has entered into the lid of the box,
I claim:
1. A box fastener, comprising a rod having a prong at one end for entrance into a box lid, supporting means for said rod for attachment to the box body beneath the lid in which said rod is slidably mounted, said supporting means serving to direct the lower end of said rod into engagement with the box body when the rod is lowered in the support.
2. A box fastener comprising a rod having a prong at one end for entrance into a box lid and a barb at its other end for entrance into the box body beneath the lid, and supporting means for said rod for attachment to the box bod is slidably mounted an whereby the barb of the rod is moved inwardly into engagement with the box body when the rod is lowered in said support.
3. A box fastener, comprising a support having an inclined guideway therein, a rod having a body portion slidably fitted in the inclined guideway of said support and having at its upper end an arm extending at a right angle to said body portion and terminating in a prong parallel with said body portion, the body portion of the rod being provided at its lower end with a barb.
